defense pairs for tonight

The Washington Post reports that Cassidy plans on a 5 man unit of
Bondra-Lang-Jagr
Gonchar-Witt

The logical next question is who plays defense after that?
Kiwi and Doig and Eminger and Gruden? Rotate Kiwi and Doig on alternating shifts with Eminger and use Gonch and Witt every other shift?

I don't know what Cassidy plans on doing when Gonchar and Witt are not on the ice. What I do know is that its a road game. Tortarella will have the last change. That means that at best either the Lecavilier line or the Richards line will play against a pair with no nhl experience or will both play against a defense pair without either Gonchar or Witt on the ice in the worst case. The word suicide comes to mind.

Consider this.....
the 2nd line is to be Willsie-Zubrus-Semin. Willsie and Semin have no size, no defensive skills and little to no NHL experience.
Put Doig and Eminger on defense and you have 1 player on the ice with a full NHL season under their belt.

Then the lightning put Lecavilier and St. Louis out against them?
Geez....The Little Big Horn comes to mind.

I'm thinking this would be best:

Gonchar--Witt
Eminger--Doig
Kwiatkowski--Cutta

I'm thinking GMGM should call up Cutta--he's gotta be better than Gruden by this point.

I think I can see what is behind this. The Caps are playing offense 3 on 5 every night. There is no offense coming from the defensemen and Gonchar can't trust his partner enough to confidently jump into the play.
From that stand point I understand the problem. The other side of that is that Doig and Eminger or Kiwi and Eminger will be on the ice against Lecavilier, St Louis and Modin.
I understand the problem, but I think that the Caps risk more than they gain by making this move.

Might be something they can maybe experiment with when they are on home ice since they would get the last change. Who knows. Nothing Cassidy has tried has worked anyway so he might as well keep trying stuff, lol.

Cassidy has jumbled everything up other then his defence...maybe he should be looking for a change in that direction instead of benching guys who actually give the caps a chance at winning a game

Well...that turned out sort of like expected. The Caps put real pressure on the bolts with the big 5 on the ice. they were overmatched defensively in every other shift and the 18 shots on goal in the first period showed that. in the end there was the recipe for how the caps have to win. Kolzig needs to be his Vezina Trophy best and the offense needs to make plays. Kudos to Zubrus for breaking the ice. jagr had jump and passion. It seemed to work for Gonchar. Semin with 2 assists was great too
