He's 24.....average size....mediocore stats....plays RW.
HF lists him as a 5.0C.

I don't really see a lot to get excited about here, am I missing something?

I can see him becoming a fourth liner eventually. Speed, forechecking, hard work, great attitude ... are his strengths. I would expect him to play for Milwaukee though...

Good move. We would've lost his rights this summer had we not signed him. I've always been impressed with him at the rookie camps. We'll see what he's got. Could become a good 3rd liner.

Hopefully we'll see a few more of these Euro signings: Setzinger, Sulzer, Shafigulin, etc.

at camp this past season, trotz specifically mentioned they wanted three guys to come over from europe this year and play with the admirals.. widing was one of them, along with sitzinger and lassila.. of course all three fell thru the cracks

Hmmm, makes you wonder whether or not Widing really wanted to come over. He's coming off of a year with an increased role and increased production, and he won't leave. But the moment that ice time dips, he shoots right over. It's a smart move, in my opinion. If you are not getting the ice time in your current league and there are opportunities in other leagues, you should always seek them out. It's what amazes me about Glazachev/Shafigulin. These guys are bit players in the RSL but won't come over to NA where they will be given a great chance.

our '05 draft = zero Russians, 1 Fin, 1 Swede, and everyone else is North American, and from now on I expect with the IIHF-RHF agreement still being unsigned, there will be zero interest in Russian prospects from most organizations

There wasn't a whole lot of Russian talent in the '05 draft. It's like Russia loaded up on the '04 (Ovechkin, Malkin, Radulov, Voloshenko, Lisin) because the '06 draft seems pretty bare too. And only the top talent is going to get hard first round looks right now from Russia. You can't afford to waste picks in this new NHL and with the way Russia is behaving, any Russian you draft is likely to have a nice, long contract that'll be difficult to break.

I guess he will fit right in with the other 6 that we have now.

Jerred Smithson type.

I have not seen that one. Turn the other cheek.

Wow I honestly thought Wiging would never sign a contract with the Preds. I remember back in the day when he was a top prospect for our team. Wow.

we need more North Americans on our team ... less Euros ... thanks Poile ... signing a player who's willing to end his game with a needless fight in which he gets thrown out for continuing a fight and hitting Niemi in the back of his head when he's in a prone position

I wouldn't say that clip was particularly "Euro" in character....in fact, he is much more gritty than most Euros....I actually saw a little Hordi in that guy.

It is reasonable to say that you want more North Americans on our team, but not on the basis of this clip, IMO.

Amen brother! I know that it was ugly to punch a guy in the neck but if anyone in the SEL deserves it, it is Niemi.

“Daniel is a typical Predator in his desire, work ethic, attitude and never-say-die type of game,” said Fenton. “He has matured over the years in the elite leagues in Europe and now he has an opportunity to come over take his game to the next level.”
