Potential Euro signings

There are the news in czech media that Predators are interesting to sign prospects Zbynek Irgl, Petr Hubacek and Tomas Harant. All of them probably for two-way contracts and start in Milwaukee.

Irgl had great world championship for Czech team with wonderful overtime goal versus Russia in quarterfinal. He has good offensive skills but is little bit small. Hubacek is good defensively with a lot of PK time but with also good offensive potential.
Harant is solid defensively. He had good offensive numbers in Czech extraleague playoff but he is mainly defensive defenseman. But I dont think he is NHL material. Maybe Im wrong.

Irgl(25) and Hubacek(26) were a linemates last year in HC Vitkovice.
Irgl (50gp - 16g+17a - 33pts +11 in +/- and 54 pim)
playoff: (6gp - 3g+3a - 6pts +2 and 4pim)
World championsip: (6gp - 2g+2a - 4pts +1 0pim)

Hubacek (52gp - 17g+23a - 40pts +4 in +/- and 46 pim)
playoff: 1 goal in 6 games
World championship: (9gp - 1g+0a - 1pts -1 6pim)

Harant(26) is Slovak from HC Ceske Budejovice and he was negotiating the deal with Predators last year till the last day of international deadline.
His stats: 45gp - 2g+7a - 9pts +1 in +/- and 90pim
Playoff: 10gp - 4g+2a - 6pts +1 in +/- and 40pim
World championschip: 7 gp no points and +1

I'm excited that they are willing to sign two-way deals. That shows they are very interested about coming over to North America and not just doing it to make the big bucks. It's fast becoming imperative that teams be able to find diamond in the rough types that can contribute significantly yet still earn the league minimum

Couple things come to mind here:

Zidlicky is back in Czechoslavakia.....having recently inked his $3.4mill x 4yr deal.....gotta believe he is talking to these guys about the Preds....opportunities, etc....I am sure which will help.

With having these three on the radar screen and having just signed Widing and Koistinen....you gotta believe some serious spots are opening up in Milwaukee.....

These are the Group VI free agents up for contract renewel:

Sheldon Brookbank, (VI)
Greg Classen, (VI)
Simon Gamache, (VI)..........signed with Bern, SWI.........May 7, 06
Darren Haydar, (VI)
Konstantin Panov, (VI)
Libor Pivko, (VI)
Kiril Safranov, (VI)
Jeremy Yablonski, (VI)

and of course the Group II's that might or might not be resigned:

Denis Arkhipov, (II)
Rick Berry, (II)
Brian Finley, (II)
Denis Platonov, (II)
Brandon Segal, (II)

__________

Also, we must must decide by Thursday June 1st, which junior players drafted in 2004 and which European prospects selected in 2002 or earlier they want to sign. They will surrender the rights to those who do not receive contracts by June 1.

My list of those would include:

Junior players drafted in 2004:

81 C Vaclav Meidl
107 L Nick Fugere
139 G Kyle Moir

Euros drafted 2002 or before that we still have rights to:

Setzinger, Oliver C 6' 0" 197 Horn, Austria 22 7/11/1983 ...drafted 2001
Skrbek, Pavel D 6' 3" 217 Kladno, Czech Rep. 27 8/9/1978 obtained in trade 2000 from Pitts, originally drafted in 1996
Soin, Sergei C 6' 0" 175 Moscow, Russia 24 3/31/1982 obtained in trade 2003 from COL, originally drafted in 2000
Nilsson, Mattias D 6' 3" 195 Ornskoldsvik, Sweden 24 2/6/1982 ...drafted 2000
Irgl, Zbynek C 5' 11" 183 Ostrava, Czech Rep. 25 11/29/1980...drafted 2000
Lavrentiev, Anton D 6' 4" 196 Kazan, Russia 22 8/25/1983 ...drafted 2001
Lehtonen, Mikko D 6' 1" 194 Oulu, Finland 26 6/21/1979 ....drafted 2001
Hentunen, Jukka RW 5' 10" 194 Joroinen, Finland 32 5/3/1974 obtained in trade from Calgary 2002, originally drafted in 2000
Hohener, Martin D 6' 1" 192 Zurich, Switzerland 25 6/23/1980 ...drafted 2000
Hubacek, Petr C 6' 2" 183 Brno, Czech Rep. 26 9/2/1979 obtained from Phil 2002, originally drafted 1998
Grasberg, Gustav C 6' 0" 193 Furudal, Sweden 23 4/6/1983 ...drafted 2001
Harant, Tomas LW 6' 3" 201 Zilina, Slovakia 26 4/28/1980 ...drafted 2000
Christeen, Mats D 6' 1" 181 Sodertalje, Sweden 24 2/13/1982 ...drafted 2000
Cisar, Marian RW 6' 0" 197 Bratislava, Slovakia 28 2/25/1978 obtained 1998 from LA, orinally drafted 1996
Andersson, Jonas RW 6' 3" 204 Stockholm, Sweden 25 2/24/1981 ....drafted 1999

Anybody know how close we were to the max of 50 under contract last year?

Any of these juniors or Euros you want to see definitely signed before the deadline?

hand... prior to the new CBA, the old maximum number of players under contract was 80 i believe... last year counting unsigned but drafted juniors we had 63 prospects and 23 on the pred roster for a total of 86 total in the system... subtract out the unsigned juniors (which as i understand it do not count toward the maximum limit) and you have a number right near 80, so i expect that number is still the franchise limit..

so with attrition this year (the arkhipovs, haydars, gamaches, etc), then plus the 4-8 we'll sign right after draft that we pick that aren't junior eligible, we should have multiple spots remaining to stay below that 80 number

This is where I got that number:

There are, however, potential complications. At the moment, Shero said, the Penguins have the league maximum of 50 players under contract.

Do they have the number wrong in the article?

hmmm.. maybe they do or maybe not..maybe the 80 is from the number of players you own the rights to and not have under actual contract.. could be the number 50 is the number you actually can have signed, don't know.. i do think the number 80 is the maximum you can own the rights to, but who the heck knows anymore

Just noticed the above players in bold, no longer appear on the Pred's prospect roster, so I assume they weren't re-signed by the June 1st deadline.....

good find. It's too bad with Setzinger.... probably the only offensive center prospect we had.

With the new CBA, I fully expect Euro drafting to drop by a large margin.... pretty much the opposite of what was happening with the old CBA.

So I guess no Stehlik...I wish Poile could have got this guy signed pre-lockout as he was trying to. It would be nice if we could get a definitive answer on the guy....
