Cap at 43.5M

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/artic...26_183321_4068

Don't know how reliable sportsnet is but they say the cap looks like it will be 43.5M, up 4.5M from this year. Also they said the NHL feels there won't be a problem to delay UFA's and it should continue to be July 1st.

Last year the cap was 39M and BG used approx. 35.5 at the start of the year...this time it could be 43M and he will use ...38M? He will leave some room to maneouver as the year goes on that's for sure. Do any of you guys think he will go over 40M???

With uncertainty surrounding Koivu, i think Gainey will look for a veteran #2 centre. The defense while not spectacular, does the job most nights. If Montreal can add to the top 4 at a reasonable cost, money or trade, then thats great, but its apparent that the centre position needs upgrading.

Agreed. Aside from all other reasons like losing a player we all love and who is the heart and soul of our team, losing Saku would leave us in a sorry state.

Even with Captain K in the line-up, our team is lacking a top 2 line centerman. I shudder to think the situation we would be in without him.

GET WELL SOON, SAKU!

But on topic, I could say Gainey spending about $40 Million if the right players are available to him. But keep in mind that it isn't directly $4.5 Million in extra spending room, as with an increase in the cap will come increases in individual salaries for free agents.

I agree our defense altho laking one good puck moving D is not as bad as some ppl seem to think. It's putting the puck in the net that ended up being a problem.

If the cap is $43.5M

Here is how the Habs are looking, based on the info I can find!

2006-2007 salary to date

22,903,000.00 from Fourthperiod.com

Here are RFA or UFA for the Habs and what I think they will get. (I'm not sure what some of the players salaries were last year so please help me out if I mess up)

Abby-2.2M
Huet 2.5M

Streit 600,000
Cote 550,000 (one way)
Komi 1.1M
Bouillon 1.1M

Perez 1M
Downey 600,000
Ryder 2M
Murray 700,000
Higgins 1.2M
Ribs 1.2M

= 14.75M
total $37,653,000M

leaves 5.847M left.

I don't think all these players will be back but I thought I would work out the numbers and you can decide who stays.

I don't believe Zednik, Huet or Abby (1 of the 2) will be back so thats about 3.8-4M
What do you do with Yan Danis??

And remember Souray, Rivet and Markov are UFA ( I believe) for next year (2007-2008) so I hope some extensions are worked out this year for a couple of these players.

What do you think the Habs will do???

Why not spend to the cap and improve in both areas?

Because then the team's hands are potentially tied for any additions late in the season, as well as for next year's offseason (when the UFA pool is deeper, and more importantly: Markov's a pending UFA).

I hope Bob took notes on the way the ex-welfare Oilers are now operating. Lowe signed major UFA's last summer and it's paying greatly. The Habs need another backbone d, a center and a winger. Either by way of UFA's or trades.

No, that's not what I said at all. I believe Koivu is a 1st line center, but I didn't want to get into that debate, so I just said we're lacking a top 2 line centerman, meaning a guy who could play on either the first or second line.

Again dont overspend for players enless theire top notch talent. The final four this year are all clubs that have a small payroll. we've made alot of mistake given out big contracts. Just cause the salary cap went up dosent mean you have to go all out. I dont want to pay 3mill + for a 3rd liner or a 3rd pairing defencemen.

well that sounds good...

im glad that free agency is not going to be delayed a week...
the extra cap space means that Gainey should be able to do whatever he had planned. That is good news.

It's great that the cap is going up by 4.5 million or so but it's only usefull if we use that extra 4.5 million of wiggle room.

just as we may want to, so will TB, VAN, TOR, PHD, DET, COL, DAL, NYR, CAR, EDM, ANH, BTN, NSH, OTT, SJ...

and there aren t that many 4.5M$ worthy UFAs to go around. I calculate that we'll be saving about 4M$ on 1 way contract player departures (Sundstrom, Ribeiro, Bulis, Dagenais, Vandermeer) and we'll save about 2M$ more on the Theodore trade (assuming Huet signs for 2.5 to 3.0M$).

That makes about 9.5 to 10.5M$ in cap space. But thecompetition will be fierce as alot of other teams will be vying for the same names we are looking at and there aren't that many to go around.

Its great that the cap is going up, but we all have to remember that within that cap, every team operates under their own budget. Now we don't know what Mr. Gillet has in mind for next season so its tough to know what room there is. A guy like Sundstrom added nothing to this team, and is a waste of space. The albatross known as Jose Theodores contracts is a thing of the past. I personally believe Yann Danis will be backup, and its debateable who fills the # goalie roll. Koivu seems to be a question mark, as will the rfa. These types of scenarios apply to all teams, and we will see how each one handles them. Some teams will be allowed to spend more, and some owners are going to pull the purse strings a little tighter.

This year UFA corp is very strong if you are alooking for a D-man . Chara,Redden,Kubina,McCabe,Jonanovski,McKee,Leetch ,Johnsson,Blake are all top-2 material and free like the wind .

But up front it's very thin .

wooops! sorry for my brainfart. Man, time goes so fast, I had forgotten about the Pronger trade. (whip! whip!)

The point remains, though: Gainey needs those kinds of move. Specially now that the cap is going up and the Habs are full of cash.
