I'm not even going to make excuses for him. When he came back, he was STILL our best defensive forward. Talk all you want lax play, but he plays smart. He's a lot like Fedorov in this regard. You don't see him jamming up and down the ice, but yet, he's almost always there to make the play. That's what you call playing smart.

Was it really necessary to lock up Norstrom in early March?

Is it it really pessimistic Simple Simon single source finger pointing when one of us points out that the Kings used up nearly $5 mil of the available salary cap for next season when they already knew that they were going to have, at the very least a new coach, if not a new GM?

What happened to the "No retirement contract" story?

It could be argued that Norstrom would get more than that in the market we will see come July 1st. He would be in the top 3 defensive defensemen available. It might actually be a fiscally responsible move to sign him early. Sometimes buying early is good.

It would be fine for me if we lost him to UFA. Regardless of what a guy like Mitchell might command, we still overpaid. Why? Because slowly but surely, Norstrom has been getting injured more as well as lost a step or two. We did not sign a 28 or 31 year old D man to that contract.

Exactly.

Don't misunderstand - I think Norstrom is a good player and might get that much on the open market, but he is 34 years old right now. By the time the youth is ready, Norstrom will be gone.

Whats this about Mattias getting injured more? He's consistantly been one of the helthier Kings over his entire stay here.
-Year--gms
96-97 | 80
97-98 | 73
98-99 | 78
99-00 | 82
00-01 | 82
01-02 | 79
02-03 | 82
03-04 | 74
05-06 | 77

In fact, he's probably been one of the least injured people in the entire NHL over that stretch. Only missing 31 games over nine years is superb.

However, I do fully agree that he's lost a step and is getting up there in age.

Just because Matti played though those injuries and didn't miss games doesn't mean he wasn't injured. This last season especially, he was not very effective at all after his concussion.
