Anyway, he CAN save a penalty shot and he has also saved penalty shots, he's just not really good at it - maybe his self-confidence went down after training penalty shots with teammate Jussi Jokinen?

I don't see Bäckström as anythign other than a backup. He's solid but not great in any single category. And you feel that a true starter needs to be more than solid in at least some category, be it glovehand or stickhandling or rebound control..

Probably 1 season as the backup and then back to Finland the next.. don't get confused by his stats, he played on basically the best team. Rinne as his backup had equally good numbers and is most likely your future starter if he continues to play and progress well.

I dont think he'll be coming back to Europe any time soon since it's a multiyear-contract.

Eurooppalaisten maalivahtien menestys NHL:ssä on muuttanut pohjoisamerikkalaisten asenteita.

This is not my opinion, but I thought it might be worth posting..? Somebody with better English might want to translate this.

I'll try to. This is all above text as translation:

Head scout of Minnesota Matti Väisänen were pissed off about Bäckström going over to be sparring/backup for Fernandez. Väisänen is saying that Bäckström have potential to be number one goalie(that's for those who were so against my opinion). "Dwayne Roloson did play in SM-league and Bäckström were at least equal good. Vokoun did play too, but still Bäckström played Kärpät to champion".

Basically it's just same as I did say. Bäckström have potential to be number 1, he is not going to be backup in AHL or something like that. Other teams wanted him too.

And yes in penalty shots Bäckström isn't too good, but otherwise he is good enough for big league. Some1 did mention rebounds, he does not give much/big rebounds. His glove is at least ok in normal game. And he does not make errors.
