His agent posturing in front of the Montreal media, I love it.

"Made for the playoffs" ; 5 games, 3 assists, -1.

Ribs had 2 assists in 6 games and was +1.
Plek had 4 assists in and +2
Bonk had 2 goals.

And Arnott will still make more than these 3 combined.

I don't buy too much of this ''I want to stay here'' type of crap. Luongo wants to stay in Florida but refused some offers, and will take a 1 year contract.....Everybody said that want to stay in order to put some pressure on their team to signed them. Type of ''I just prove I'm loyal, so are you???'' And then if they're not signed, well it forces the other teams that want to make an offer to make a bigger offer than expected 'cause ''apparently he wants to stay so we need to make a great offer to force him to leave....''

I don't put too much into it either. I'm just hoping he stays in Dallas.

The La Presse article mentioned the irregular play of Ribeiro and the need for a center who can feed Kovalev. If that francophone newspaper isn't defending Ribeiro's position relative to Arnott, who would?

Oh yes, it always is a language issue, La PResse can't write anything unbiased, blablabla...

Shut up.

And Arnott will still make more than these 3 combined.
Hopefully Gainey looks at more than five-game segments when assessing potential free agents, but there is no doubt a risk with Arnott on a big contract.

The great thing about stats is you can be rather selective. Pavel Datsyuk got zero goals and three points in six playoff games this season. Modano had one goal and three assists.

What about this line? 23 8 12 20 18

Arnott's stats when he won a Cup with New Jersey. Hard to dredge up any Ribeiro playoff stats to match that unfortunately

Arnott has 60 career playoff points, more than Ribs, Pleks, Ryder, Murray, Begin, Perezhogin, Downey and Bulis combined.

I'm on the fence when it comes to Arnott, though. I don't want BG to sign him to a deal if it costs more than $4M per season and is longer than three seasons; he has just been too inconsistent during his career to warrant a big ticket IMO with the salary cap. If the Habs can get him for $12M for three years, I think it may be a good acquisition, but I can see him getting more than that unless he wants to play here with Souray and Carbo. Sounds like Dallas is his first choice; his home the past few years where I'm sure he has more friends than in Montreal. The Habs would likely have to offer him about $20M over four years to lure him to Mtl - and I think that is a deal that could come back to haunt the team if Arnott dogs it.

Arnott no doubt has that inconsistency tag, but there are postives to signing Arnott:

Despite being a third liner at times on strong teams in Dallas and New Jersey, Arnott has average 64 points per season over his career. A compliment of Koivu, Arnott, Plekanec and Bonk at center would bring both size and point production, one of the more solid center quartets in the east.

The Habs don't really have a definite top-line center prospect in the system unless they are counting on Grabovsky to play there someday. Three years of a 6-4 Arnott complimenting Koivu may just work, but at what cost? Does BG give high end money to three or four forwards and surround them with young, skilled, inexpensive players and cheap role players? With Zednik next up on Gainey's shopping list after letting Sunny and Bulis go, it's starting to look that way.

The defence core is pretty solid; we don't really need to add a free agent defenceman this season (other than the Cube in the $1M range) if Komo, Souray and Markov can continue to improve, Dandy plays like he did in the second half, and Rivet performs as he did last season. I expect the defence to continue to improve under the Carbo/Jarvis regime (along with Gainey's input and the new coach) - the difference was apparent at the end of last season.

On the other hand....the Habs could go after a Langenbrunner in the 3 years, $8M-$9M range. Even if it cost the team $10M, it would still be half the cost of an Arnott 4-year deal. Ribeiro, Plekanec, and Grabovsky can fill in at center on the second line, and perhaps one of them can prosper. It leaves more room for the Habs to add a defenceman later in the season if one of the top six falters, or perhaps a second-line center if the need arises.

It also gives some younger players like Chipchura and Lapierre, two of the Habs "closest to being ready" prospects an opportunity to land positions on the club.

The ideal solution would be to trade Bonk to the Stars for the rights to negotiate with Arnott, but I don't think the Stars would fall for that one.
