Is Boyle even remotely close to being ready for "the big club"?
I think that the point of that line was more that a contract would give him a chance, albeit an extremely slim one, to crack the big club roster. Whenever you sign a player, you don't tell him that, no matter how well he plays, he's going to be with the affiliate next season. You tell him that he can play himself onto the big club if he impresses enough in training camp. If Lombardi and crew really want to sign Boyle now, that's their trump card. It doesn't really matter that his chance of making the Kings immediately is extremely low.
