Andrew Ladd

I know the point is pretty much moot because of the fact that Carolina took him at #4 in 2004, but man were most of us wrong about Andrew Ladd. I remember there being a great deal of speculation that the Rangers were really focusing on picking Ladd at #6 that year, and I also remember most of us being against the pick. The kid is huge and great down low and in the corners. Great pickup by the Canes.

the main thing is that there was questions about ladds offensive upside, and I think it's fair to still wonder about that. no one really doubted he'd be a NHL player, but they weren't sure if he'd be more than a good 3rd liner. looks like he could be a good 2nd liner now, but in the few games i've seen him in, i haven't seen him do anything that really wows me.

he just works hard, uses the body, and will get the garbage goals. that's perfectly fine, and pretty much fits into what people thought of him at the draft

That's not how I remember it. As I recall a lot of people were surprised that Slats couldn't or wouldn't top Carolina's offer.

If I recall correctly, Edge was Ladd's biggest advocate on this board

I wanted Ladd badd, and I remember all of the speculation of us grabbing him in the two weeks prior to the week of the draft. Then during that last week, they had us drafing Olesz, and then a few days right before the draft, they had us going after Montoya, which was obviously our eventual selection.

I'm more than happy with Montoya, he's going to be a great goaltender, and you can't have enough of those.

Burberry,
Were you around then? Surely under a different handle as I do not recall your name. What were you back then?

Most choices were Ladd, Olesz and Schremp. VERY few people wanted Montoya.

I was hoping for Sather to trade up to get him, oh well at least we got Montoya

Looks like I may have been confused, but man do I love this kid's game. It would be nice if Jessiman can turn into a similar player.

Now imagine being a Columbus fan like myself and knowing your team willingly passed on Ladd to draft Picard.

They tried to trade for the #4 pick?

They had the #4 pick. Traded down and took Picard (9th I believe). They ended up drafting Pineault with the pick they acquired while trading down (again, I believe. Memory is foggy).

I wanted Ladd...once Montoya was picked I was pretty pissed, only because I felt like Blackburn still had it in him to be a solid goalie. I was also hearing a lot about Lundqvist and how he's supposed to be a really good goalie but he still needed to be brought over from Sweden.

Blackburn ended up retiring and Lundqvist is our number one right now. I don't mind the Montoya pick as much now. He's going to be very good down the line.

youre not confused, canes fans have been defending the pick since it happened. we've been hammered about it for a while. i remember some TO idiot who keeps changing his name wouldnt let it go, saying drew stafford was obviously a better pick. i wonder where that guy is now. i wouldve picked montoya just as easily at the time, though.

I was Bleeding Blue back then. I created that bad boy from my early high school years and had it on the old old boards(the one with Pasha666). Now I'm going to be a senior in college and I decided to switch up the name last year. I never have been an extremely active poster because I often find it more enjoyable to just read other poster's opinions but I do like to chime in time from time.

Olesz was my first choice. However, I was not upset at Montoya being picked. It made sense.
