Jackets Re-Sign F Jody Shelley To A Two Year Contract

http://tsn.ca/nhl/news_story/?ID=168845&hubname=nhl

Quote:
The Columbus Blue Jackets have re-signed forward Jody Shelley to a two-year contract, club President and General Manager Doug MacLean announced Thursday. As is club policy, terms were not disclosed.

Shelley, 30, has spent all four of his National Hockey League seasons with the Blue Jackets, registering 10 goals and 17 assists for 27 points with 856 penalty minutes in 277 games played. He is the franchise's all-time leader in penalty minutes and ranks fourth in games played, trailing only David Vyborny (395), Tyler Wright (309) and Marc Denis (294). In 2005-06, Shelley set career highs for goals, assists, points and games played with 3-7-10 in 80 games and led the club in penalty minutes for the fourth consecutive season with 163 PIM.

"I love playing in Columbus and I'm proud to be part of one of the best organizations in the NHL," said Shelley. "I feel really good about our team and I'm looking forward to helping the Blue Jackets take the next step and bring playoff hockey to our fans."

I like Shelly, butif the Jackets make the playoffs, it will have had nothing to do with his contributions.

If he makes Zherdev and Nash feel safe out there...then he will have contributed.

Tell me you dont honestly think that these players feel unsafe unless Shelley plays his 7 shifts or so a game, do you?

Maybe not, but I bet it makes Franzen and Kronwall think twice about throwing a questionable hit on any Jackets player having to play them 8 times a year.

The Jackets are very loyal to there players. They gave Nash a very generous contract when they didn't need to do so.

I've heard plenty of skill players say they feel safer out there when their team dresses a guy like Shelley.

They will SAFER when Shelley is playing, you would be surprised if you knew how much skill players appreciate the presence of a top heavy enforcer.

You hardly ever see a top enforcer going after the culprit of a dirty hit... they usually end up dancing with the other team's top bruiser. Having an enforcer does not make a player who plays dirty hesitate to throw a cheap shot.

Name one that says they feel "safer". Ridiculous.

Do you actually think guys like Steve Avery give a crap if Shelley is in the lineup? Or a defenseman wont go for a big hit and do his job? That is complete, utter, old school group think nonsense.

Steve Avery - didn't he used to pitch for the Braves?

Sean, Steve; close enough, I guess.

Back on topic - Jody should enjoy this contract, as I'm guessing that it will be his last one with the CBJ. There should be a prospect who will be ready to take Jody's spot on the roster by the end of the 2007-08 season. If there isn't, as a Blue Jackets fan I'll be very disappointed.

I think this contract is more for the popularity of Shelley more than anything else. As was said before, the CBJ are loyal to the players that are loyal to them, Shelley has been a team player from day one, even if he has had pretty crappy numbers. This will for sure be his last contract with the CBJ. At a bit more than 600k a year, it doesn't really hurt our cap room and hopefully he can help out some of the younger players coming in this year.

Ryan Getzlaf this season when asked about Fedoruk's impact on the team.

You should talk to the players themselves. You will be surprised.

He's going to drive up the asking price of enforcers!

How about Bobby Clarke? Will he work for you? He's not exactly a wuss either.

By simply being employed, he's driving up the asking price. They're all going to want to be employed now.

Yes, because I'm sure the Anaheim faithful would be happy to see The Fridge go right?

Some of you are really underestimating the importance of enforcers/role players for their teams and should really pay more attention.

Better yet, help out the NHL and buy their DVD - Honor & Courage: Tough Guys of the NHL so you get a clue and hear from players such as Guerin, Thornton, Primeau, etc..explain the importance of those guys to some of you.

Why do you think Wayne Gretzky (you do know him right?) came to the defense of Marty McSorley during and after the Brashear incident? Why do you think he got the head coaching job at Springfield after he was blacklisted by the NHL? I'm sure it had nothing to do with Marty watching Wayne's back in Edmonton and Los Angeles for all those years right? I just love it when people post without really knowing. Laters.

They don't underestimate the importance, they just don't understand the importance of having an enforcer around.

One of the biggest myths at HFboards is the theory of enforcers being useless because of the new rules. People (most of them new hockey fans) don't understand that the new rules didn't affect the role of enforcers in anyway.

Get the quotes. They feel "safer"? Is that really what they said? Ok, maybe they can feel that way, but guys like Shelley do not prevent other team's players from doing their jobs in terms of big hits and agitating. Total nonsense.

I would be interested to read the entire quote though if you have it.
