Ruslan Salei offically up for grabs

sign this guy now !!

The Ducks, meanwhile, will probably let unrestricted free agents Ruslan Salei and Jeff Friesen test the market. Salei, a 31-year-old defenseman, is seeking a three-year contract above his 2005-06 salary of $1.824 million.

"I told him, 'There's no hard feelings. Go see if you can get it,' " Burke said.

I agree with you, Salei is the kind of aggressive defensive dman we need, especially if we don't resign Bouillon... IMO he would be an upgrade over Bouillon, and Dandenault, while being on par with Rivet

He would bring alot of grit (and I mean 'alot'), nice defensive awareness, some mobility and good experience on the blueline.

One of my favorites since his coming into the NHL

If we could get him around 2.5M it would be great.

Burke must know what he is doing... he probably thinks Salei dont deserve that type of money or he can find a sub who can make the job and wont be paid that much.

Propably same reason Burke sent Fedorov and Sykora away?

Salei would be addition for Habs, no doubt, but we need to add some size up front before breaking the bank for him.

hmm salei could be had for less than 3, but kubina is still tempting...

yeah Burke is probably going after jovo, imagine jovo with neidermeyer?!

or maybe he needs to save cash so that he can give beauchemin a big contract raise?!

While I like Kubina, he's a right d-man and we already have Komisarek, Rivet and Dandenault on the right side and I don't see any of them moving. Personally I'd be elated if we got Salei as I think he'd be a good upgrade over Bouillon who only wants a 1 year deal. Our left d would then be Markov, Souray, Salei with Streit/Cote backing them up.

Nope!!
A good "D "he is, but not for that price. Dandy is over paid. Salei would be better than him, but we can't over pay to get him.

With all due respect to my man Frankie saying Salei is an upgrade isn't saying much. An upgrade on our bottom pairing D is not really a significant move. If BG goes out on the UFA market IMO he will be looking for an upgrade on our 2nd pairing. Is Salei any better than Rivet and/or Souray is the real question to ask? Another question is : is he worth $ more than these 2 guys make because that's what it could cost.

Also, where did you see/hear about Bouillon wanting 1 year deal, doesn't make sense to me.

I was thinking the same thing, snatch him or someone like him right out from under a lot of teams noses as they fight over Redden, Chara, Jovo etc.

Salei would upgrade the 3-4 pairings and drive Souray and Komi down leaving the Habs with great depth.

The 1st line or 1st pairing dont play 60 minutes.

Nothing wrong with having 5-6 top 4 D men.

Yeah i guess that's a way to look at things.
The way I see it is that I like our top 6 at the moment but if the occasion presents itself I'd be more than happy to upgrade it. If Bouillon is one of those 5-6 top 4 d-man who splits the ice time I'm not as happy with our top 6.

If Salei comes in he has to push someone out because we won't play 7 d-man while paying each of them well over 1M$.

I'm all for it. This takes me back to my orignal question in this thread. Is Salei an upgrade on Souray? Or at the very least a lateral move?
If we can get something to bolster our offense with Souray (maybe someone overvalues him) while improving ( or not downgrading) our D then it's win-win.
