Avs Cap Number and Salaries (Updated Regularly)

I thought it'd be a good idea to start a thread dedicated to keeping track of the Avs Cap number for reference, and adjust it as the players sign their new contracts, or new players are brought in.

You're right. He got paid $1,050,000 last year, and 1,250,000 this year. Looked all over for his contract info, and couldn't find the total, or whether his salary was staggared, but I just found this site that gives players salary by year.

Flames re-signed Jordan Leopold to a 2 year/$2.3 million contract.
He earned last year 1.05 (according to TSN.ca) and this year he will make 1.25 million, so it's 2.3 million total. Which is 1.15 per season. (against cap.)

Leopold has one year left on a two-year, $2.3 million contract that will pay him $1.25 million next season; only his average salary of $1.15 million will count towards the NHL salary cap, which is expected to be about $44 million in 2006-07. It will be two years before he is eligible for unrestricted free agency.

BTW Lappy's contract is a little tricky too. He was paid $1.140 M last year, and this year he's at $1.064 M. It's a little tough finding details on his contract info too. I found a page yesterday that gave the total of his contract, but they must have just deleted it today, becuause now it doesn't come up. You guys have any links on that?

This is forgetting that Sakic and Blake each are due $2.3 million bonus payments for '06-07, as part of their 2001 contracts, that will each count toward the cap.

They got $2.3 M in bonus payments? I didn't know that.

Wouldn't that only count toward last years cap though, since that was on their last contract not the new one?

"Laperriere signed a three-year, $4.2-million contract with Colorado that includes a club and player option for a fourth season that could bring the total deal to $5.6 million depending on his performance, the Canadian Press reports."

http://games.espn.go.com/cgi/fhl/pla...ve?statsId=954

The Fourth Period and TSN have Lappy's cap hit as 988,000.

http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/feature/?fid=4467&hubname=

The TSN link isn't completely up to date; they don't have Vaananen, Richardson and Leopold listed as under contract.

Would those count even though the Avs declined to pick up the options for Sakic and Blake for 06-07?

Nice. That $4.2 and $5.6 with bonuses were numbers I saw yesterday on another website. That contract was before the lockout, so it was rolled back 24%. I'm pretty sure the cap hit figures in all the potential bonuses. That $988,000 number seems a little low, since he was paid $1,140,000 last year, and $1,064,000 this year. It's possible his first year, or maybe his option fourth year are a lot lower than those numbers, to bring the average down. I guess we should assume that's the correct cap hit, until someone proves it wrong, since two sites have it that way. Thanks Jori.

BTW, feel free to keep pointing out mistakes. I'm not above making them, while I try to juggle working at the same time with posting here, lol. These numbers should help us all out, so feel free to point anything else out.

Right that's what I was saying. These are brand new contracts, so I don't think any bonuses would count toward the cap this year. I could be wrong though.

Well that's a huge deal if AD is correct about the bonuses. That would be an extra $4.6 million. It would also mean Sakic is counting over $8 million against the cap this season, and that there'd be a cap hit on Blake even if he signed with another team...

No offense AD, but right now I'm taking considerable comfort in the fact that you haven't always been right about everything...

I certainly hope those bonuses wouldn't count. That would be a $4.6 million dollar hit. That would give the Avs what....12 million to sign 9 players? At least 5 going to Blake?

If AD's right, all the Avs can do is resign their own players. Other then swapping Tanguay for Leopold, your stuck with the same team that was swept by Anaheim.

Yea, I'm actually surpised we know this much about the numbers, and who has signed. It looks like it only took them a few days to announce the Vaananen signing, since somebody here noticed over the weekend that NHLPA.com had his number up for next year. I would have thought we would have had to wait until at least sometime in July.

From CBA Article 50.2 (b)(i)(B) (which deals with contracts signed before the new CBA):
Any Deferred Bonuses earned for services performed prior to the 2005-06 League Year and not requiring any further activity or achievement by the Player as an active NHL hockey Player for the 2005-06 League Year or for any League Year thereafter, shall not be counted for purposes of the Players' Share, Upper Limit or Lower Limit.

If the bonuses due Sakic and Blake were deferred signing bonuses, they will not be counted against the cap. If they were general bonuses applying over the length of the contract, only the portion that applies to the 2005-06 season will count against the cap.

I apologize if anyone saw the earlier post that I deleted. I copied the wrong part of the CBA for that one.

That would still only apply to the old contract as far as I know, unless the new ones have performance bonuses which I doubt.

Yeah, I was doing the whole lineup and I just decided to add them in until they are actually cut.

Exactly....and if the Avs declined to pickup the options (for the old contract) in which those bonuses were associated...then they should not count against the cap. I guess we'll only know for sure once the team is set and we can add up the salaries.

The section of the CBA that I quoted deals specifically with contracts signed under the old CBA. I'm sorry if I didn't make that more clear If the old contracts of Sakic and Blake had deferred bonuses, they fall under that Article.

New contracts are under separate rules. but what Adrian was talking about concerned deferred bonuses from their 2001 contracts.
