http://www.phillyburbs.com/pb-dyn/ne...06-675021.html

This article says he wants $4M, now take it from me, he isn't worth $4M after last season, but he is one of the NHL's top 20 defensemen, and he isn't on the level of Chara or Redden, but I bet he would be a prime candidate to come to LA. 30 years old, and would undobtedly with Norstrom and Visnovsky form one of the top 3 or 4 d-corps in the league. No Demetra, no Roenick, and if the Kings dump Miller and Sopel, the Kings will have plenty of room to offer a 3-year $10M deal.

And with the Kings top 2 front office members coming directly from the Flyers, they might want to bring over someone who has at least been in winning enviroments.

Not knowing that much about Johnsson to begin with, he was one of the players I advocated the Kings going after.

Assets: Has terrific offensive instincts. Plays a very intelligent game from the back end. Sees the ice well and makes crisp passes out of his zone.

Flaws: Doesn't hit enough people. Is vulnerable when lined up against power forwards.

Career potential: Power play quarterback.

That is TSN's take of KJ. IMO, they are right on the money. He is a smart player, he knows when to jump into the play and he has good wheels. However, he lacks the physical aspect in his game. He doesn't hit people.

Nice end to end goal by KJ vs. Rangers

Wasn't Clarke really unhappy with Johnsson's play last season before he got hurt? I read that somewhere....I think it was in THN.

yeah his play last season was inconsistant at best. which was suprising to allot of people because many thought he would adopt very well to the "new NHL" .
Wish him luck getting the 4 million per he thinks he deserves.

Pass. The Kings don't need to add another soft, one-dimensional type defenseman. Why waste $3-4M on that type of dman when it is a better investment to spend a little more and acquire a dman who can log 30+ minutes, play in all game situations and do the job of two defenseman.

Signing 30 year old dmen with no upside is not how to build a winner. You'd be better off paying the extra dough to Chara who is a complete player and can dominate defensively and is under 30.

2) Wouldn't DL know quite a bit about the up/downside of KJ from his countless days watching the Flyers play?

I'd imagine he'd know all about whether he's the kind of guy who he wants in the room as he builds the Kings. Not blind faith here - but I trust DL here to make the call on this guy. 4kk /yr is a LOT of money for a potential Janne Niniimaa... especially in the year of the free agent defenceman

Johnsson is in NO WAY a poor man's Joe Corvo. He plays a smart, but not physical defensive game. He is very comperable to Tomas Kaberle.

I would say go for it in a second had he not had those serious concussion problems. However, up until last season, he play at least 75 games a season, so he is not "fragile".

Serious concussion doesnt make a player in the NHL, fragile?

Not necessarily. Some people can fully recover while others can't. *** See Paul Kariya.

EGADS! What I meant was - and this is a BIG difference - is that "Joeseph Corvo is the poor man's Kim Johnsson". JC being the lesser of the 2... Somehow, Tubby knew what I was thinking better than I did.

I suppose I could edit the original post, but I'll let it unfold to the reader in real time...

I really don't think that Johnsson is the type of defenseman that Lombardi would sign. Letting Corvo walk and then signing Johnsson for $3.5M doesn't make a whole lot of sense. Similarly, it makes even less sense to keep Corvo and sign Johnsson.

So you'd be against signing Lidstrom just because he's not physical?

Johnsson is definitely worth 3.5 mil completely healthy. However, his health is the question at this point.

He's not totally healthy. He's a fantastic defenseman though, and if you pair him with Norstrom on a regular shift and with Vis on the PP it would pay off. I'd sign him to a $2 year $5million deal with incentives that could pay him an additional $500,000 per year, all based on games played.
