They better give him a chance now that Sundstrom is gone.

Why didn't they sign him for more than a season?

I wouls have liked to see him signed for more than one season but oh well atleast he's under contract. Think he'll become a solid 4th liner for us.

resigned = quit
re-signed = signed again

To me one year contract makes sense perfectly. There is no certainty if he can make the cut... maybe Gainey wants to see what Ferland is capable of before committing further, this also keeps him hungry playing for his extension.

maybe it's Ferland himself that just decided to accept the one-year qualifying offer

Well, for bringing his name in another thread today, I'm quite happy that he has signed and hope he'll be given a real chance this time. It's 2-way so it's not that bad for the team as well.

Gainey likes to make them earn their long term contracts.

I think its an AHL signing. He faces some big competition with Lapierre and Chipchura.

These guys don't have to clear waivers; Ferland does. I'd say Ferland has a very clear and distinct advantage because of it. It also explains why Ferland's NHL stay was extended during the season. I think he proved then he clearly belongs on a 4th line in the NHL.

True, but is it enough if Chipchura plays like he can? Thats where my doubts are. More reasons to clear Zednik of the lineup.

Unless he's developed a new bag of tricks over the summer, Chipchura isn't ready for prime time yet. A year in the AHL is definitely called for in his case.
