I'm very surprised to see this - I fully expected Luongo to wade in the unrestricted waters next year.

Either this means the hockey gods are signalling Florida got the short end of the deal, or that they don't like Vancouver and they'll be stuck with an overpaid underperformer for four seasons.

I like Luongo, but you'll forgive my Panther-fanness in saying I hope Vancouver rots for the next four seasons while the Cup goes far to the South

Yeah. I thought at the time of the Bertuzzi-Luongo deal that it was a good deal for the Canucks if they can sign Luongo long-term, or not a good deal if Luongo was out after a year. Well, I guess this makes it a good deal.

Is it a good contract?

We'll see... but if you're going to overpay somebody, it might as well be a guy like Luongo. Unless his play falls off dramatically, it's not going to hurt the Canucks.

Life in the Northwest Division continues to get nastier.

That's a lot of cash to tie up in one position. But if you were to spend that much, goaltending might be the smartest area to tie it up in, considering that Luongo backs it up come playoff time.

Good move by the Canucks....

A. You can't compare this deal to Marty Brodeurs..Brodeur is a rare player who takes a discount to stay where he is happy.

B. If the Canucks didn't sign him, people would be all over Nonis..so you can't critique him for getting it done (even at 6.8)

C. The Canucks finally have stability in net...which is exactly what they needed

Comparing Luongo to Neidermayer is like comparing apples to oranges. Look at the teams they played on! Luongo has obviously never had much help in front of him in Florida, whereas Neidermayer was part of a dynasty that won multiple cups in New Jersey. It's rediculous.

Last season was arguably the best team Luongo had in front of him in Florida, and look how well they played down the stretch. They went from being way out of playoff contention to coming up just short. And who was a key component in getting that mediocre team there? I'll give you a hint, it wasn't Jamie McLennan.

Two different positions, two different teams, two totally different players.

Nevermind his non-existent playoff experience, he should get his fair share now.

with crow and bert gone my hate for the canucks is not really there anymore but I do hope that this does not work out ....

the guy has never played a playoff game and makes 6.8 a year ,,,craziness

but it has a better chance of panning out than not, I would think

Belfour, Khabibulin, Theodore ring a bell?

It's the riskiest to tie up your cash in, for sure.

They've got some more holes to shore up though.I wonder how and who'll they fill it with?

CKNW Vancouver is reporting that the contract is structured thusly:
Y1: 6.0m
Y2: 6.5m
Y3: 7.0m
Y4: 7.5m

27.0m even, 6.75m cap hit.

CKNW also reports that Luongo has a no-trade clause in the final three years of the deal. He is not eligible for one in year one.

TSN has it too: http://www.tsn.ca/news_story.asp?ID=170025&hubName=main

So does Nonis have to hire Francois Allaire, publicly state he wont trade him and get to decide who would be his backup (Mclennan) (the 'things' he wanted from Florida)

I hear alot of WHAAAA going on here.

How many playoff games has Luongo lost?

If there was one guy in the league who hasnt played in the playoffs I would gamble on, Luongo would be it.

Nonis made a ballsy trade, now a ballsy signing, good on him. The lord hates a coward.

Where are the guys who claimed he got ***** because Luongo would only sign one year?

Gilles Lupien told Vancouver media that those conditions only applied to the Panthers.

Um, ok. People had cows around here over what Khabibulin got and he was coming off a Cup win and years as an elite player, people have cows about Brad Richards' contract despite his multiple accomplishments, but Luongo gets a free pass around here for some strange reason, and he always has. I hope for the 'nucks sake this guy lives up to his billing, because I like them and they're about the only west coast team I'll stay up late to watch. VERY bold and assertive GMing by Nonis, makes me interested to see what he does next. Obviously a little risk doesn't phase him at all!

Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Vancouver (before this signing).

It's risky *not* to tie up resources in net, either.

I must say......congrats to all the canucks fans. I really think this move will help your team immensely. i was really hoping the kings would've gotten luongo Some might speculate that 6.8 is way too much...... and it might be if it turns into a turco situation. IMO though, if there's one young goalie that deserves that kind of money, it's luongo.

Hopefully it will be worth it for Vancouver's sake.

Great job by Nonis in signing him. I have to say after this, he won the trade hands down.
