Our current cap situation

I often read about money saved in the Theodore trade but I wanted to see real numbers and see what our current cap situation is, given that we keep the same team. Here's what I came up with, it's not science but it's not wayyyyy off either. According to this, our first round team is pretty expensive!! How do you feel about those numbers? And about our cap situation?

Higgins 0,85 - Koivu 4,75 - Ryder 2
Kostsitsyn 0,85 - Ribeiro 1 - Kovalev 4,5
Zednik 1,9 - Plekanec 0,69 - Perezhogin 0,85
Murray 0,6 - Bonk 2,394 - Begin 1

Downey 0,6

Markov 1,75 - Komisarek 1
Souray 2,242 - Rivet 2,565
Bouillon 1 - Dandenault - 1,725

Streit 0,6

Huet 2,875
Aebischer 2

Total: 37,741

Cap doesn't work this way, it's the average of a player's salary over the length of his contract

Huet = 5,75 over 2 years => average of 2,875 per year

Let's say the habs don't sign Ribeiro, Bouillon and Aebischer, that's 4 millions to get a backup goalie, one defenseman and a second line center... Even with Danis and Coté it will cost us 1,5M...

It's not that bad with still over six million available. Add to that any trade made will likely include the likes of a Zednik or Ribeiro which would help even off any incomming salaries.

I think Plekanec is only .45m but yeah that looks like what it could be if no moves are made

It's not perfect but it shows we are in pretty good shape financially imo.

We even have enough to ADD a top player to our lineup before substracting current players who might/will leaves AND keeps a security margin.

Bonk and Aebisher departure eventually will free up 3M (with 1.3M for the 2 replacements) which could be use as a good starting point to resign Markov (3M + his 1.75M is a good enough starting point) without hurting the team.

Based on what hapenned last year, take about 3 millions out of those 6 for call-ups, so we're down to 3 available. Even if we trade Zednik, Aebischer, Ribeiro and don't sign Bouillon, we save 5,9 and replace it with at least 1,5 + 2 forwards, so it's about 7,4M to go on the UFA market... Enough for Arnott @ 4 and let's say Langenbrunner @ 3 but nothing more. And that scenario is only IF we can let all those players go, and IF Côté plays defense for us... Not much room for Elias or Chara!! lolll

With all this Elias talk I thought I would add 7-7,5 to your numbers and see what needed to be cut to sign Elias for that.

Elias 7-7.5 - Koivu 4,75 - Ryder 2
Higgins 0,85 - Ribeiro 1 - Kovalev 4,5
Kostsitsyn 0,85- Plekanec 0,69 - Perezhogin 0,85
Murray 0,6 - Begin 1 - 0,6 - 1

Downey 0,6

25,290-26,190

Markov 1,75 - Komisarek 1
Souray 2,242 - Rivet 2,565
0,6-1 - Dandenault - 1,725

Streit 0,6

10,482-10,882

Huet 2,875
1
3,875

Total: 39,647-40,947

Have to
Trade:
Aebischer
Bonk
Zednik
replaced by Elias

let go or sign cheap
Bouillon

This leave's 3,153-3,953m cap space

Below 38 mill for pretty much our entire team, I think we're in pretty good shape !
Plus, if we have an opportunity to significantly improve our club by taking on a big contract, it's easy to find wiggle room: trade Zed and/or Abby, let Ribs walk away, sent Bonk to the minors...

I just added Bouillon and his new contract to the list.
