That is a nice depth signing

Helps take away the pressure if something happens to Lundqvist & Montoya. Is this signing a precursor to a Weekes trade?

You know what this means

One of Henrik, Montoya, or Holt is getting demoted to the ECHL. Vets don't lose roster spots to kids and that will continue..

Just kidding

Good depth signing. Gives Montoya a good partner down in hartford and allows Holt to go to the ECHL and be a #1 goalie..

end of the road for Weekes? Do we have anyone to trade him to? Is he a free agent?

This is not a surprise. From June 27.Wolfpack play by play broadcaster Bob Crawford has a mailbag

Quote:
Amy from Bristol, CT, writes, "The rumor mill is turning and word is that Steve Valiquette has been sighted in CT and told someone that he's the backup goalie for the Rangers. My personal feeling would be that Holt would go back-up in New York (after his stellar playoff performance) and Montoya and Vali would play in Hartford, at least until Monty is ready to move up. Any ideas? Is Vali definitely back?"

Amy, if that's true, it hasn't penetrated the sand surrounding my head as of yet. It certainly wouldn't surprise me if the organization signed a veteran goaltender to help mentor guys like Al Montoya and Chris Holt, but I haven't heard anything concrete regarding anything like that. My guess would be that, as much progress as Al and Chris made this year, the Rangers would prefer that they both play as much as possible, and they presumably wouldn't get much playing time behind Henrik Lundqvist in New York. And if they were to bring in a veteran to spend some time in Hartford, he would have to be a guy who could be effective in what could very likely develop into a number-two role. I don't know if Steve Valiquette is at the point in his career where he would be OK with that, but he certainly is a great goalie and a great guy, so I'd personally love to see him come back into the organization

Is Valiquette...

coming to North America after a successful season overseas to play in the AHL? As a backup to Montoya, after Holt showed that perhaps he'd be better served in the AHL as opposed to the ECHL? This could be a precursor to a Weekes trade.

i doubt the Rangers would put Holt in the ECHL after doing an excellent job filling in to an injured Montoya and terrible Gherson. This has to be a precursor to a deal involving Weekes.

Lundqvist/Montoya in the NHL

Holt/Valiquette in the AHL

Guess Holt is getting demoted to the ECHL. Its useless to bring Montoya to the NHL and let him play 15 games when he can be playing 50+ games in he AHL.

I see Valiquette as the #2 in New York, with Montoya and Holt splitting time in Hartford.

I hope so. If Valiquette forces either of those kids down to the ECHL, he's forced a backward step. Neither of these goalies has anything to learn on that level of hockey.

I think Weekes is gone.

Now that you mention it, it could be a precursor to trading Montoya, but only if Valiquette signed to be a backup in Hartford. It really sounds to me like a precursor to trading Weekes. The only hole in this logic is that it requires someone to want to trade FOR Weekes.

I'm pretty sure it's going to be Lundqvist / Valiquette in New York and Montoya / Holt in Hartford.

It's not exactly the greatest time to move a goalie considering Nabokov,Cloutier and Giguere are on the block
