Expect the Unexpected

Well, I have to say that not singing anyone is definately unexpected!

If Mr. Gainey thinks that this team will just get better on its own all by itself over the summer then we better start planning for our top 5 draft pick next year.

so we'll somehow be a much worse team next year by not losing any major players?

Weve had worse teams and still made the playoffs. That means that Ribeiro will likely be back as our 2nd center..

you don't make sense. of course we will be better.

bulis and sundstrom are dead weight and gone.
last years rookies: perezhogin, plekanec, higgins, komo and murray will have matured and surely have to come back improved.
new rookies: possible kostitsyn, latendresse, cote, lapierre will be hungry to crack the lineup.

give me reasoning as to how we can't be any better.

I still think Bob has a plan in mind. A trade. But WHEN he`s going to do it remains to be seen.

It's not possible to get better? If Huet can repeat the numbers he had last year and we continue to get good scoring from our defense, continue to have a good PP, the team has something to build from.

We need better seasons offensively from our forwards. Koivu, Ribeiro, Kovalev, Ryder (all round play), Perezhogin, Bonk and Zednik must find the back of the net more. If these guys can add more offense then they did last year the team imo is in good shape.

Speak for yourself. Hoping for both Elias and Arnott was desillusional. Just like every single one of Gainey's moves (or lack there of), people will be complaining before realizing in the end that he made the right decision. This time around, he decided he wouldn't hand out a huge long-term contract to a forward like Elias or Arnott. I trust him on that.

Can I remind you that we made a big offer to Elias but NJ simply just won? He went for the big FAs, but theres 29 other teams out there, youre not gonna win every time, with or without the money.

And on Arnott, we dont know what happened exactly.

I think the moral of the story is: he tried but it didnt fly! Best luck next year or other solutions/plans.

Last year, it was august 3rd when Bob did something (signing Kovalev) so let's just wait, and we'll have a big surprise tomorrow.

I hope, i'm getting desperate...

I think Gainey made a run at Elias and was turned down. Past that... Arnott I wasn't sold on, but he would have helped.

If missing out on two players (assuming Gainey even pursued Arnott) is cause for fan desperation then I think that says more about the depth of the free agent pool this year (at least at forward where the Habs' needs are) than anything about Gainey.

Glace Bay Bye makes a very good point: the Habs are a very young team. It started the season with six rookies in the lineup and four played semi-regularly. Kovalev, at 32, is the eldest player. This is a team that will naturally improves as it accrues experience.

It was because of the lock-out, he made a move the day the UFA market open or at worst the day after...

So you think Higgins, plekanec, perezhogin, and kostitsyn will take a step back collectively? I dont think that's realistic because this is the only way that the habs even have a chance at finishing bottom 5.

Take a step back, how many teams are in montreal's position where they have multiple decent prospects just graduating or recently graduated to the NHL. The luxury of growing within your organization is getting rare by the day.

I'll say it once again, This season will come down to how rapidly our youngsters develop this year. (It would be nice to supplement those players with some vets but its not the end of the world otherwise) We already know what to expect from the vets like koivu and kovy.

Shouldn't we unexpect the expected because we got deceived by Elias, Arnott and so on and this is not new, almost no rumor concerning MTL became reality last season.

I think Gainey is going to regret ever uttering the words, "expect the unexpected" for the rest of his days with his performance this offseason so far...at least on these boards anyway...

Or maybe it was unexpected that he does nothing yet again, then we had to expect him to do nothing, which we should have done, then Gainey is 100% right.

lol

This team will have much more offensive potential than the last season with Kostitsyn coming and Bulis gone... Perezhogin is another key kid that I highly expect to blossom early in the season... Latendresse or Grabovski could have a serious shot at making the team if we dont sign any top 6 fowwards on the FA market.. Outside Shanahan, I would prefer one of the kid I named above on the team rather than any other FA..

We are in pretty good shape even without any major signing... We have only 2 signifiant weakness (a PP specialist on defense in the mold of Redden and a big skilled center).. I think Plekanec can be a pretty good second line center and I think Markov can do better on PP with more skilled fowards to pass the puck to... If ever Carbo uses Bonk to center our third line, Bonk will have the chance to play with way better wingers than the previous ones (Sundstrom and Bulis gone), what should help him to rack some decent numbers..

Higgins Koivu Kostitsyn/Ryder

Perezhogin Plekanec Kovalev

Zednik Bonk Kostitsyn/Ryder

Begin Murray Downey

Extra: Ferland

I think we can group 3 solid lines that can score anytime even strenght.. Kostitsyn will add more pure skills on PP as well... And a great energic fourth line to change the momentum when needed.

Im pretty sure Gainey will sign a signifiant top 6 though, we have high chances to see Shanahan in a Habs jersey IMO.

There's no gurantee these guys will be better. If Cote plays a minute this year, that spells doom. He sucks.

According to many of youre comments, everybody sucks...
In the short stint that Coté had he was rather impressive yet unspectacular. Hes a beast, players couldnt get pass him but hes not the greatest skater i will give you that.

Hiow your team progresses is only one step of the bug picture... how are the other teams improving themselves in the offeseason is just as important.

A lot of teams that were out of the playoffs are getting beetter (boston for example)... since we finished 7th last year we can't afford not to improve our team with more talent, otherwise we'll be looking at a lottery pick.

While we HOPE our kids progress, can you be sure that our best players will continue to be our beat... we don't have enough scoring depth right now..and we are definately lacking a top end defenseman too.

If we have Mike Ribero, Richard Zednik, Murray and Downey playing regular shifts, Boullion playing 15 minutes a game.... I for one think we will need even more from Huet to get into the playoffs. I am SICK and TIRED or the strongest part of our team being goaltending!!!!!!!!
