Question about Holik

As an American citizen, is Holik eligible to play for the U.S. in the upcoming World Cup? I assume he'd be willing. He'd look great with Marchant and Rolston on a "fourth" line.

I believe the rule is that once you represent one country in international competition then you can't play for a different one later on down the road.I'm not sure if Bobby ever played for the czechs but I would think he did as a kid coming up so I don't think he'll be eligible.

While that's true for every other international tourament, the World Cup isn't played under the same rules. Remember it was set up originally outside the regularly sanctioned international events (Olympics, WJC etc).

Holik played for the US when he was younger, therefore he was not eligible to play for the Czechs at the Olympics. Same was the case for Petr Nedved. Nedved played with Canada at one time, probably when he was in juniors, therefore he can't play for the Czech national team either.

However, both Holik and Nedved can play with the Czechs at the World Cup. It's a different situation. All you need is a citizenship for that country and you can play for them.

Nedved won a silver medal with Canada at the Olympics in 1994.

I don't know if Holik still has Czech citizenship, he's a pretty gung ho American.
