Samsonov ??

What teams are in the Samsonov Sweepstakes? Has anyone heard any possible destinations on where Samsonov might be going?

If the price was right I wouldn't mind the Rangers signing him, unlike the posters who suggest Guerin, Shanahan, Hasek, etc., he is only 27 yrs old. Fast, creative playmaker - a good fit for the new NHL.

I'm also intrigued, although I worry with the number of small guys already on the squad.

Sergei always sruck me as a guy who broke in with great upside, then had injury issues, had Boston-is-a-crappy-place-to-play issues, had lock-out issues... but with a fresh start at only 27, he could maybe recapture the promise of 23/24.

I brought this up in another thread. He's definitely one of my 3 most wanted (along with Witt and Markov). But, at the rate Sather's going...I'm not really holding my breath for either of the three. Looks liek he's standing pat and icing the 05-06 team with minor upgrades.

the main problem I see is that he'd be another small finesse forward for the Rangers, and he's not THAT good as to significantly improve the 2nd line.

it seems like it'd be more of a "change of scenory" type of signing

Guess it comes down to Sykora. If they resign him, then Samsonov is overkill, IMO. However, with no Sykora the team has NO secondary scoring (outside of Prucha). I know we like to believe that that's where Dawes & Immonen come in, but it's unrealistic to EXPECT that of them. Again, IMO.

I agree. Sykora may be more of a sniper than Samsonov, but Sammy provides some more playmaking and dangle...I like to think it just about evens out, but Samsonov might have some more upside and is younger...

and while Sykora is bigger, it's not like he really uses that size a lot.

meh...in some ways it is attractive but like I said, I don't see it being a huge improvement.

even with Sykora, ther was no secondary scoring

I like Samsonov and think that he'd be a good fit for this team.

Of the two, I'd rather have Samsonov. I think they cancel each other out scoring-wise (neither prolific, but both could pop in 25 goals any given year), but as you said, Samsonov brings play making ability. Might mesh better with Prucha (assuming Renney has him on the 2nd line). Also, at 27, you can lock him up for a few years and not worry about the tank running out of gas.

all true, but it doesn't seem like the Rangers really have any interest in him.

I'd prefer to have Samsanov...

over Sykora. Cullen is pretty good at getting the puck in the net when you get him the puck. If Samsanov can get him the puck, Cullen may be able to repeat what he did last season. My only skepticism is that Samsanov plays the left side, and ideally I'd like to see a guy play with Prucha and have Prucha on his more natural left side, while still getting the power play time. I know that you try to improve your team and don't let one player stand in that way, but if Prucha can repeat what he did last season, and stay healthy while playing a bit more, he should be able to get 30+ goals which should be beneficial to this team.

Which is why I'm not getting my hopes up. Whatever happens, happens.

I don't think he would pass the "character" screen. And then, there's the issue about disappearing in the playoffs. He'd be a perfect fit...in Chicago.

Samsanov disappeared...

goal-wise in the playoffs - he still accumulated a fair amount of assists and got the puck on his linemates' sticks.

If Samsanov was a RW or could play it well, then he could have been a consideration.

Big no from me. He is a lazy player at times and I dont want that mixed in with our hard working team.

Samsonov is to brittle for me. With all things being pretty even between him and Sykora, health issues should be a major concern. I would consider a one year deal, but long term-no.

I agree. I have always felt that he was an underachiever. He's scored 70+ point only twice, and those were with Thornton.

I'd much rather give dawes a second line spot, then samsonov.

No need to add another small non-physical forward to the group.
