East & West Early Playoff Outlook '07?

I know it's extremely early...only about the 3rd day into the off-season, and alot of people hate gauging teams this early but What are your early outlooks on both conferences after all the moves and signings?

Which teams in the East/West got significantly better or worse in your opinion?

Way too early to figure out the playoffs. As far as who is having/has had the best offseason so far, here are my picks:

Best: Minnesota, Boston, Anaheim, Rangers
Worst: Buffalo, Dallas, Detroit

I'm predicting a 30 team tie, now through the first week of October.

3 days into free agency is extremely early? You think?

This is like finding out someone is having a boy and the fetus is 12 weeks old and saying, "So do you think he'll be able to run the 40 in under 4.5 when he gets older?"

Those are the types of questions people tend to ask at the abortion clinic

Oh well I guess it is kind of premature but I'm doing this just for fun. My outlook might look horrible. However keep in mind I'm still learning about hockey...only started following this year. So if something is terribly wrong..or I missed your team don't blast me.

West
1. Calgary - they have a Vezina winner in Kipprusoff, and still have great defensive depth. I think adding Tanguay will help them add enough scoring to win the NW and lock up a #1 seed in a brutal West. conf.

2. Anaheim - it looks like Brian Burke is making moves to win now in regards to the Pronger trade..they now have 2 franchise D-men who can be rocks on the blue-line and log 30 mins. of ice time a night. PP should be deadly, but if they are to get this 2 seed they need their young forwards..Perry, Pennner, and Getzlaf to step up big time.

3. Detroit - Losing Yzerman, and possibly Shanahan will hurt, however they still have a core intact with Datsyuk, Zetterburg. They're going to need solid goaltending from Osgood.

4. San Jose - I think they'll be battling it out with Anaheim for the Pacific, they have great depth at center with Thornton, Marleau. They still have some questions along the blue line that need to be answered.

5. Vancouver - they seem to be the "sexy" pick at this time, but if Luongo lives up to the hype I think he can finally carry his team to the playoffs...depth might be a problem here however.

6. Nashville - Adding an experienced center in Arnott should help, if Vokoun comes back healthy..I think they can finish alot higher, the defensive corps. looks bright however they are in-experienced.

7. Dallas - Hopefully Turco's play in the playoffs this year is not indicitave of next season, seems like they've lost some guys but I think Modano can have a great season.

8 Edmonton - It's been a tough past few weeks in Oil Country..I still think they can make the playoffs next season they have a bunch of talented young forwards, and hopefully Roloson can continue his solid goaltending throughout the course of a whole season. There will be major questions along the blue-line now however.

East
1. Buffalo - I think top to bottom they have great depth..losing McKee hurts, but I have a feeling Ryan Miller will solidify his spot as a top goalie in the league next season.

2. Carolina - I have no problem penciling in the Canes here, they have Eric Staal locked up and should be ready to go, there are questions about how Cam Ward will respond to a full season as the starter but I think he'll answer those fairly quickly.

3. New Jersey - really I don't have much changing in the east but now that the Devils have retained Elias, I still see them winning the Atlantic..Brodeur is still the best goalie in the league IMO.

4. Ottawa - this is still a really talented squad, they lost Chara but managed to retain Redden, the big question here will be what kind of goal-tending will they get? whether it be from Emery or Gerber or both.

5. NY Rangers - I'm kinda liking their off-season of going after some Cane vets Cullen..A.Ward. Lundqvist should be solid in net, and if Jagr can have another great season I can see them winning the Atlantic.

6. Toronto - They spent alot on defense, if former Calder winner Andrew Raycroft can bounce back with a good season I think they have a shot, the question is who besides Sundin will be putting up the points?

7. Boston - They seem to have made alot of big moves in FA so far, are they just a paper team? only time will tell.

8. Florida - Goaltending is a huge question at this time, but I think they have a promising team with Jokinen, Bouwmeester, Horton, and if Bertuzzi can rebound with a great season I can see them making the playoffs.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Hopefully my rankings don't suck too bad.

So the Devils, Thrashers, Panthers, Coyotes, and Oilers have folded, and Carolina gets to field two teams as the defending champs?

I actually asked that question once. I didn't get a solid response.

Just 'cause I'm a jerk.

wow. where to start??
1.your missing teams, come on.
2.calgary and ottawa who both have to be among the favorites to win there conferances are out of the playoffs??. i mean iam biased to calgary but out of the playoffs? and ottawa. thats even more rediculous.
3.tampa last in the east??
4. the rangers winning the east? and the kings winning the west with minesota fourth. man.

i dont wanna be a jerk, second jerk in the thread i guess but this first jerks post has to be one of the worst ever.

i'll be back with my prediction later. imma start a new trend here and think about this for more then 2 seconds.

I'll take an early shot at it.

West.

1. Detroit- They will most likely not be as solid of a team as they were last year(still very good though), but they are still playing in the easiest division and will dominate.

2. Calgary- They have only improved, and their division has only depleted; except for that Minnesota team.

3. San Jose- Scary to see how good this team will be with Thornton all year. If they can get a solid effort in the net, they should win their division.

4. Anaheim- Just too good of a defensive team. Still need a bit of an improvement on offense though, so if they land a Samsonov or two or someone like that, they should be fine.

5. Minnesota- Will probably get off to a slow start, but when things start clicking in December, they will be a dominating team the rest of the way.

6. Dallas- Still a very good team. Turco and Modano will be the deciding factor for how this team does, obviously.

7. Nashville- I have a feeling they won't do as well in the reg season this year, but will be better in the playoffs.

8. Vancouver/L.A/Phoenix/Colorado- One of these teams will make it to the bottom of the list.

Not in it

Columbus- Not yet there, but improving.
Edmonton- This team will be confused all year. The whole city will have that buzz all year as well.
St.Louis- Improving
Chicago- Slowly improving.

East

1. Buffalo- They're good. Oh, and Ottawa will not be the dominating team in this divsion this year.

2. Philly Flyers- Hate em, but better than the Devils.

3. Carolina- The core of the team is still here. Enough said.

4. Devils- Still will pretty much be the team of last year, and that means getting owned by the Islanders all year

5. Senators- They'll make it in.

6. Bruins- The Minnesota of the West this year. Or vice versa.

7. Panthers- Bertuzzi and Auld will have great years, and Canuck fans will be crying.

8. Leafs-Islanders-Lightning-Rags- One will make the bottom, or higher

Not in it-

Penguins- Next year and many years to come
Capitals- ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^("Maybe" next year though)
Thrashers- You had your chance last year.
Canadiens- I'm confused on this team, so i put them down here.

k here it goes. and this was alot tougher then i thought. ecspecially the west

EAST
1. new jersey
2. buffalo
3. carolina
4. ottawa
5. ny rangers
6. philly
7. florida
8. montreal

boston
toronto
pitsburg
ny islanders
tampa
washington

comments: it was hard to keep boston out but as of right now i dont think they have the goalie. and i not leaf hating i just think they still havent spent the money in the right place and raycroft is overrated and not the answer for them. the rest of the bottom is self explanitory. i also think new jersey is on there way back up to the top and a presidants trophy could be in the cards. could be buffalos year as well.

WEST
1. calgary
2. san jose
3. detroit
4. vancouver
5. anaheim
6. dallas
7. nashville
8. la

edmonton
columbus
colorado
phoenix
minesota
st. louis
chicago

comments: again it was hard to leave out edmonton but i think they swap places with vancouver, like it shoulda been last season. naslund gets it going again and luongo obviously could be the difference. phoenix and columbus i see as two teams that are on the rise, and who could get in there too instead of la or dallas but i couldnt bring myself to put them in the playoffs, maybe next year.LA also looks alot stronger then last season and should be in this year, barring another meltdown. if calgary can get another #1 or # 2 centre i really believe they could win the conferance, if not another third place in the west should be locked. detroit depends on shannahan and there number one goalie could be an issue but are still so strong they should win the weak division they have the joy of being in. san jose and anaheim are tough cause either could take there division so you could easily put anaheim in at #2 as well.

Tampa gets an upgrade in goal, which is all we heard about since they were bounced out. Modin is gone, but his production will be picked up among the team. They lose Sydor and Kubina, one of which could be replaced by an infant, the other who was obviously hurt by the rule changes, and already has a reasonable replacement, and we can't even make the playoffs anymore.

1. buffalo
IMO, the best team in the east. Solid at forward and defense, and have a great young goalie in Miller.
2. rangers
Great scorers, talented young goalie, and key UFA signings get the Rags the division this season.
3. florida
Lose Luongo, gain Bertuzzi, Allen, Auld, Salei so far. Best team Florida has ever had. Will be a bruising team to play against.
4. ottawa
Solid forwards, good defense, even though Corvo isnt the answer for Chara. Can Emery and Gerber take this team deep in the playoffs, that is the ???
5. nj
Best UFA signing by keeping Elias and Langenbrunner IMO. With Martin between the pipes, 1-8 in the seedings is possible.
6. philly
Good scoring, solid defense, albeit an old defense. Goaltending will be the issue with this team.
7. carolina
Lost some key players to FA so far. Where they a one year wonder? Staal is the man, but can the rest reproduce what they did this season?
8. montreal/tb/boston
I like the Bruins acquistion, I dont think they have enough though...Montreal has talent, and we need to see if Huet can continue to grow...TB upgrades with Denis, at the cost of Modin, and they downgrade on D IMO...this spot is a toss up/

It's too early, but what the hey.
East:
Ottawa
Carolina
NJ
Philly
Atlanta
Buffalo
Toronto
Florida

Boston has too many questions with new players and coaches, Jagr may/may not be motivated (How will his shoulder hold up?), Tampa's killing their team with high-end salaries, Montreal didn't get better while everyone else that battled for 8th last year did. Pittsburgh, Washington, Islanders are self-explanatary. Just not enough yet.

West:
Nashvegas
Anaheim
Calgary
Edmonton
Detroit
Minnesoter
SJ
C-Bus

Columbus and Minny are two much-improved teams who will make it to the dance. Dallas gets weaker at most every position, and Vancouver's just not there yet. Youd don't lose Jovo, Bert, and Carter (presumably) and get better, even if you do add Luongo. Phoenix lacks an identity, LA a goalie, and Colorado continues to get worse. St. Louis got older, and Chicago is still, well, Chicago.
