Brendan Shanahan: Evan at his advanced age (37), 40 goals is 40 goals. The Blues are reportedly out after re-signing Petr Cajanek, the Senators and Canadiens -- having been spurned by Jason Arnott -- remain in the hunt, and the Bruins, who are acting as if the salary cap is a suggestion rather then a strict guideline, are the frontrunners. Rumors of Shanahan's stunning contract demands -- upwards of $5 million per year for at least two years
5mil$ might be ok for this year for the Habs. But were gonna need that 5 mil$ cap space next year in order to re-sign atleast two of Markov/Rivet/Souray + adding one UFA D-man to replace the one leaving. Markov should get around 5mil$/Rivet 3mil$ and Souray will be looking for 4.5mil$ out west. add the fact that we might have to re-sing some fowards too depending on some new contract made this year.
BTW this is why I think bringing Emelin over this year was a must. He could have taken Souray's spot starting next year with 1 season of AHL hockey under his belt.
Markov-Komi/Cube-Rivet/Emelin-Dandy would have been fine for next year.
Anyway BG will make a trade or let Latendresse and Kostsitsyn show what they can bring for less $$$
Are you dillisional? Shany is a future HOF and SCORED 40 GOALS, Lat is a rookie who never played in the NHL before. 5 mill for a player WHO SCORED 40 goals, it's a no brainer if we aren't spendin that money on anyone else. Kost and Lat, as much as I can't wait for them to break out, we need people who can score NOW
4, 4.5 or 5, I don't really care, it's not my money. Sure, there is the issue of the cap, but so far I haven't seen any teams that are in 'cap-hell' make any desperate moves so far. I'm sure Lou has a plan for his team and a half-decent GM (which Bo is) will learn to work around them, and we should stop using that excuse not to spend IMO. Besides, the way I look at it, who's more useful, Shanahan at 5mil or Sykora+Poti at a combined 5mil? I say ShanaHAB.
