Per CKAC.

The world champion of hot dog eating has been crowned.

A Japanese man who has eaten 53 hot dogs and 3/4 in 12 minutes.

That's, wow.

Carbo Report

- Today was an Habs golf tourney for sponsors.

- Hypes his own golf tournament.

- Says they were very interested in Arnott, but there are 29 other teams and a lot of competition for players. Says Habs are doing good financially but have to care about the cap. Says team has a good base. Says that even if they don't add anyone they have improved over last year. Says Gainey will do his best.

- Says taxes and pressure may have been factors in Habs not getting anybody.

Communication Was Cut & Recovered.

- Says offers were made but that some teams were more desesperate than others and raised the prices. Says Gainey plans long term.

- Says many teams make offers that make no sense.

- Says it's not easy drawing anybody anywhere. Says with the moves and expansions in Southern cities, players want to play there.

- Says all players use other teams to raise the prices, not just the Habs. Says agents lie about interest in their clients to raise prices. Players ask more to play in Canada because of taxes, and then others in the States want the same amount.

- Says Habs shopping ain't through. Mentions teams will be in cap trouble and good players will be available. Says "At least one" player from the original shopping list is still available. Didn't say who, despite being asked who. Humorously said "Oh you have a right to try to know who..." when asked.

- Doesn't know who will replace Andre Savard.

- Says improvments are likely to come through trades.

- Talks about his golf tourney. Profits go to Canadiens Fondation.

Interview Over. Discuss.

Expect the Habs to trade for a player that commands a lot of money (as no UFA left fits the bill).

He also basicaly said that they looked at Progner.
That some players ask for more to play here because of the taxes and stuff...and when montreal ups the offer they go back to american teams and say...we got x amount from montreal....and they get matched.

Said that some teams will have trouble going under the cap once arbitration period is over and that all the contracts are given in one month or so.

Said that Gainey has a long term plan.

He said that everyone were interested in Arnott and Pronger but the cost was high ( That means they tried to get them if you can't read between the lines )

That's the most interesting thing I got from that. Either Shanahan or Sykora that they're probably still pursuing, hopefully they'll sign him.

It's funny how the salary cap tries to make all the teams equal, but the best players end up wanting to play and sign with teams for other reasons then money, like less taxes, beaches, no snow, etc. So basicly it's not as fair as it sounds. Teams in the north should be given a reason to play there to make up for not having beaches and sun. Something like highering the cap for those teams or something.. Who else thinks it sucks to see all the 32 year old UFA sign in the south? If I was some players wife, where would I rather live? Anaheim or Ottawa? If I had to guess, it would be Anaheim...

How else can you get Free agents to come here when there are so many different factors for signing elsewhere?

Nope no mention. They just asked the questions about the lack of moves, and then talked about the golf tournament. Everything that was said has been summarized in this thread already.

Personally, I'd much rather have Samsanov than Sykora; more skill and consistency and perhaps more chemistry with fellow Russian Kovalev...

Sykora's poor finish soured both Anahiem and the Ranger last season and its no surprise hasn't been signed yet...

It does suck but I guess it's life and there is no way of changing that.

Carbonneau indirectly identified the probm. In effect he said that, given their choice, few players want to play in Montréal. It's not just a climate in which it's possible to play golf and sunbathe most of the year that attracts players to California and the southern US, it's the baggage associated with the city: the high taxes, the language issue, and the hyperventilating media. Maybe Gainey should concentrate on drafting Russians and Nordics instead of spoiled North Americans.

By angry, I assume you mean eager and/or hopeful? angry = mad, or faché in French. Eager means you can't wait for him to play there.

People are so dumb.....In the same phrase he said something like we did improve from last year and Luongo is not in Florida anymore, and Chara is not in Ottawa and now callers after that were all frustrated 'cause they were saying that it appears for them that the only way we did improve is for teams losing other players......First, the guy is scrutinized over something that is not even his job. He has to answer questions that he doesn't have the response, he will stumbled from time to time, and by the way he did mean that we did improve amongst ourselves as a team and we will be better witht the kids we have. Sure, Carbo has something to say about UFA and other but I do believe that Gainey makes some calls without talking to Carbo either.....

And all that talk about well Gainey said he would do that, do this, we are being screwed, 'cause we give tons of money to the Habs and they don't do anything, that's so childish, what about he tried but players didn't want to come.....And he made a great statement about the agents who might be the biggest problem of all.....

Anyway I did like the end of the interview 'cause it really seems, like I hoped, that Gainey will sign some people, but they will mostly wait a little, so who's in trouble as far as the cap is concerned and then make some trades that will turn out in our favor due to the other team's situation.

Liked the interview, liked Carbo, and please give the guy a ****in break

Well many players who played for the Habs wants to stay here if they have enough playing time. Koivu re-sign here for 3 years, Kovalev for 4 years, Huet for 2 years, and it was like that in the past...
