Shanahan

I'm convinced that DL is still looking to sign a top 6 forward. The reported offers made to Elias are evidence of that.

As I look at the list of available FA the name Shanahan certainly sticks out. The guy is exactly the type that DL likes. He's still very effective, could be had for relatively cheap, and showed great chemistry with Cammy during the WC's.

Original specualtion had Shanny going to Boston, but it doesn't appear that the Bruins have much money left. They already have Chara, Zhamnov, Murray, and Savard signed to big contracts.

So what do you guys think? Is Shanny a possibility?

Shanahan/O'sullivan/Cammalleri

Go

I see he and Bill Guerin as possibilities. Is Mark Recchi a free agent?

It's a possibility and a good option if it can be done.

I believe Recchi is still a FA.

But I would rather have Shanahan than Gurein or Recchi.

Blake, Shanahan, and Lubo ripping one-timers with Cammalleri controlling the half wall could make for a hell of a PP unit.

Too bad Parrish won't be around to be the front man. Dustin Brown is willing, but probably not yet able...

I actually thought Brown was quite effective the few times he was on the PP last year. He did a good job of parking himself infront of the net. Nearly half of his goals came on the PP. It's too bad AM didn't give him much of a chance.

Edit: I just took a second look at the stats and noticed that Brown had more PP goals last season than both Frolov and Conroy.

That's pretty impressive considering the limited amount of time he got on the PP.

It seems pretty likely that Dustin's going to get a good look in that role this year.

It's easy to forget how young he is, but I'm always a little dissapointed in his finishing instincts at the NHL level. By that I mean there's no burning desire to bury the puck, ala Cammalleri.

But Brown's obviously got the tools (heh), and Shanahan would be a great mentor for him.

As far as Frolov and Conroy go... They play different roles than Brown on the PP, and they're not really PP specialists anyway.

Conroy has 20 career PPG and Frolov's probably never going to be terribly effective unless he's willing to park in front and get his nose dirty. Really dirty. Like Smyth and Holmstrom dirty.

Anyone can rack up PP assists by dishing to Demitra then watching him set up Lubo for the one-timer.

In order of who I'd like

Nolan- Seems like he'd be a good fit and we've heard that he is healthy. He also has history with both Lombardi and Crawford (who coached him in JRS)

Shanahan-He'd be a real nice fit and a fantastic mentor for the young guys. Big time character guy and has played with Camms and been coached by Craw in INTL play

Guerin- Has Boston ties to Lombardi. Out of the three would probably make the most impact but will probably be the most expensive.

I'd like one of these guys and not more than that because I'd love to see O'Sullivan and Kopitar make the team.

Nik, I'm with ya on Shannahan and Nolan (for me in that order), but either one would be a very good addition for the reasons you spelled out.

It might be just me, but Guerin has always struck me as a bitter, cranky guy who benefitted greatly from his centers and is best suited for the old NHL. He proved part of that right all last year. If I'm a GM, I'd say no, but I'd be interested in the consensus.

I wouldn't want Guerin. I hear he's a total *******.

Someone on LGK posted a pic of him slashing his own teamate during practice.

Guerin is a punkass. Shanahan would be a good addition to the Kings.

No to Rechhi. he is 38 and was minus 5 in the playoffs and minus 8 for them in 20 reg season games. Overall, he was minus 36 for the year with the Pens and Canes.

Add his minus 5 in the playoffs, he was minus 41 for the year.

Yeah I don't want Recchi either.

And Nolan's injuries scare me, that's why I think Shanny is the best choice.

this place is schizo. One moment everyone wants to rebuild around young players, the next they want to give retirement contract to every dinosaur in the league.

How about we stop talking about all of this and just trade for Havlat?

But if you trade you have to give up assets.

Ok, a second rounder...

Kings would probably have to give up too much for him, at least in our eyes.

What are you guys' feelings about Peca, Halpern, and Rucinsky?

I take it everyone is ok with buying a bunch of old nearly done hockey players?

Seems to be that was why the Kings sucked for all those years. Kept wasting money on names and not on talent.

I hope we don't get Shanahan......

I'd like Shanahan out of the remaining UFAs. Who cares if he's up there in age? He scored 40 goals last season. If he manages only 25 next season, I'd be happy. The best thing about him, though, is that he exemplifies a winning attitude and would be the perfect role model for Cammalleri, O'Sullivan, Brown and Kopitar.

Johnjm22, that's a very good point that you bring up about the Bruins probably not having the money left to sign him.

We're not giving up assets to get these guys, and were only signing them to short term deals.

We need some older guys to go along with the young kids. Look what Anaheim did last year.
