Predict This Year's Ugly Arbitration Cases

Who do you see as players that have now played their last game for the team that holds their rights?

Every year it seems there are players that don't like the treatment they get from their teams in an arbitration hearing and either get traded or settle on a 1 yr deal and bolt as a free agent. On the flip side, there are sometimes players that win in arbitration and get too much $$$ for the teams to want to keep them.

Who gets put on the trading block off the arbitration list?

Sean Avery v. Los Angeles Kings. Of course, it would have been worse had Dave Taylor still been GM.

Obviously Martin Havlat in Ottawa is gonna get ugly, I assume he will be traded before his hearing.

Michael Ryder vs. Montreal

The last contract negotiations dragged on quite some time for some reason. Ryder was last (at least one of the last) players to get signed.

This time I think Canadiens offered Ryder something like $1 million per season type of deal. At the same time they threw Ribeiro a big raise.

While Ribeiros performance was worse then in previous season in every area, Ryder managed to score more goals (30) then during his great rookie season and was a lot better in playoffs (6 games 2+3).

I think this has potential to get ugly real fast...

I can't see a Havlat trade happening. He won't sign a multi-year deal, so nobody will want to give up anything good for him, but then he's a really talented scorer, so the Sens won't give him up without getting good stuff in return. Catch 22.

Either he changes his mind and signs a long deal, or we'll see him on the UFA market next summer, where he would be THE most sought-after guy, no question.

David Legwand vs. Nashville

I don't see the Predators trading him unless they get a No. 2 center back, but Legwand has not lived up to the hype that surrounded him in his draft year and as a No. 2 pick, he has been considered a bust. On the other hand, he is a very solid NHL'er and has developed into a solid two-way center. He will be hurt due to missing time last season due to a torn ACL, but at the same time he came back late in the season without any surgery and gutted it out to play down the stretch and into the playoffs.

It was obvious to even some of the Legwand-haters here in Nashville that the team was much better with Legwand in the lineup on one-leg than we were without him in the lineup. I think he is poised for a big year now that Arnott is here to allevate some of the pressures that were always placed on Legwand. I think he can break out much like Marleau did in San Jose last season after the acquistion of Joe Thornton (not comparing Legwand to Marleau or Thornton to Arnott).

I think this is going to be Legwand's final season in Nashville (unfortunately) unless a multi-year deal can be worked out prior to arbitration. I like Legwand, but I just don't see him staying in a city where he is constantly berated although he is a very valuable member of the franchise.

I don't expect Horcoff to wind up on the trading block, but I do expect he's going to get an award that will have people going

I would have said Brooks Orpik if Craig Patrick was still around. Orpik has had problems with management in the past and CP has been known to rip apart players in arbitration (he almost made Martin Straka cry). With Ray Shero in charge it shouldn't be so bad but I think CP would have ripped Brooks a new ***-**** and Orpik probably wouldn't be in a Pens jersey again. JMO.

I agree with you. Unless Horcoff is signed before his hearing, I bet he'll get a contract that will cause everyone to yell overpayment.

Jack Birch, who does the Panthers Contracts, says talks are going smoothly and anticipates none of the Panthers going before an Arbiter.

I have heard that before, about players almost or actually crying, does anyone know any players in particular?

I heard Bobby Holik with the Devils was really pizzed off at what Lamoriello said about him in the hearing. Not 100% that it was Holik though, maybe Elias or Sykora.

Its gonna get ugly quickly, mainly because the case will be over in 30 seconds.

Holik said that Lou asked him to excel in a shutdown role and not worry so much about offensive numbers. Then come arbitration time, Lou said that Holik just didn't put up any offensive numbers.

Mike Milbury famously ripped Tommy Salo a new one in arbitration and Salo left the room in tears.

Ah arbitration season. It just won't be the same without Mad Mike

You'd think, but it looks like Muckler will trade him for (relatively) little return. He's already qualifying about trades working differently now, fan perception of trade value needing to change, etc. If by some miracle Havlat isn't moved, it won't be for lack of trying.

Anyway, I expect the rest of the Sens to be settled before their hearings, but I agree that Ryder's case with Montreal could get ugly. Ribeiro's deal is ludicrous, so I don't blame Ryder if it does.
