If 40 goals equals a bum, then what does that make Tomas Vanek?

Anyway....stupid comment by you aside, I'll let you know if I am happy with this deal once I see the terms of it.

If true, this could really get the ball rolling on the remaining free agents. I wouldn't be shocked if Samsonov lands in Detroit if Shanny truly has signed with the Rangers.

3 playoff goals the last 3 playoff years, 40 goals in the regular season doesn't get you anywhere in the playoffs.

Bum? No, but you're not paying him for a playoff performance anymore.

If I'm not mistaken....those past 3 playoff years consisted of 2 first round exits, one of which was a sweep, and on e 12 game playoff inwhich he had 6 points...

Again, not great numbers, but its not like the Red Wings went real deep all 3 of those years.

I think the point is Shanny was one of the reasons we didn't go deep... the whole team stunk, but you expect your 40 goal scorer to do SOMETHING in the playoffs... you expect your "power forward" to hit people and drive the net, not play the perimeter... Shanny is still great on the PP but his prime is well past... good luck to him, I always thought he'd retire a Wing... sad to see him go but at least there will be change in Motown...

And in 2002 he was scorerless for 11 games prior to scoring a goal in the final game of the finals. I'm not trying to bash Shanahan, but he's had a history of having a lack of motivation and not always showing up in the playoffs after strong regular seasons.

Do you think it has anything to do with his age, and maybe wearing down come playoff time?

I know this wasn't directed at me but I am so bored that I am online and so I shall answer! hehe I think part of it is age NOW... but he has had the stigma of floating around for a few years in Detroit... Bowman constantly had Shanny in the doghouse.. and constantly had to motivate him... I love the guy, but its clear he has nothing left for Detroit... maybe a change will light a fire in him again... He's a great player and a great Wing... so if this is true I wish him luck

The reason Shanahan isn't going to return to Detroit is become he has become a hybrid of Ray Whitney and Brett Hull: a perimeter sniper who is ineffective in traffic and always looking to get rid of the puck as quickly as possible when in danger areas. He'll commit himself to the defensive zone but is overall pretty irresponsible there. He no longer hits or has any strength on the puck. I cannot remember the last time that I saw him initiate contact in order to strip the puck from an opponent. His speed (except when given a gigantic lane) is also anything but an asset. His sharpshooting ability is the difference between, say, 25 and 40 goals. Anyone worthy of carrying Mikael Samuelsson's jock strap is going to be capable of scoring 25 goals put in the position that Shanahan was in. So really they're just out that extra edge that he provides (which isn't much these days.)

There are teams who need a sniper first and foremost. They have guys who can be counted on to do the work along the boards, in front of the net, etc. They won't rely on Shanahan to set the physical tone for his line and that, IMO, is an infinitely better fit for him. However, the Rangers will provide none of that for him.

I'm honestly sad to see him go, but I do think it's for the best. I was worried the Wings would pay him 4m per... that would have really hurt our cap.

Good luck to ya, Shanny... and thanks for the memories.

The Rangers also have New York, a place where Shanahan has wanted to play for 15 years. And they have a need for a player like Shanahan, one of the NHL's few remaining power forwards who scored 40 goals last season to belie the notion that he is winding down at age 37

I really hope this doesn't mean Samsonov to Detroit.

Shanahan had a great many years in Detroit. He helped win three Stanley Cups and gave the city many memories. Sometimes it's just time to move on. Detroit will now pursue Anson Carter or Sergei Samsonov. It does allow them to sign an extra player such as a Brad Isbister also.

Quick note to Larry Brooks: Nice turncoat article after yesterdays.... Fool..
