3 way blockbuster deal involving Sharks, Sens and Hawks
Chicago gets:
Tom Preissing and Josh Hennessy from San Jose
San Jose gets:
Mark Bell from Chicago
Ottawa gets:
Tom Priessing, Michal Barinka, Josh Hennessy and a 2008 second rounder from Chicago
Chicago gets: Martin Havlat and Bryan Smolinski from Ottawa
Let the DL needs to go threads start now. Looks like a deal that helps out all the team in a way. Chicago may get burnt in a year if the cant resign Havlat between now and then.

Im not sure if its such a great trade for San Jose....Preissing was a really promissing and was good for them last season on Defense...To give up both Preissing and Henessey, JUST for Bell (whos had plenty injury issues in the past)???
Chicago got the best of the deal....Sharks get slightly thinner on D with this trade. Ottawa got a fairly good replacement for Chara in Preissing, who will do great with the Sens and Redden and the rest of the gang.
It looks like Chicago and San Jose improve a good bit, at least on paper. I hope that it doesn't end up making life harder for the Kings.
I have stated it before.....but even with the Kings improving somewhat this offseason it looks like many of the other teams in the West have improved just as much (if not more). To me this signals that the Kings will "probably" finish pretty close to where they did in 2006.....maybe a couple spots lower in the standings.

Yeah, but everyone can't improve. That's why I said "on paper." Look at the Pens, who were the biggest winners "on paper" last Summer.
I actually don't think that these trades will mean much. I think that the Blackhawks will still finish worse than the Kings and the Sharks will still be better, thus maintaining the status quo.

Right.....which is why I said the Kings will probably finish right where they did in 2006........Blackhole city!
I wish we could have gotten Havlat. Brown, a prospect and a pick would have done it.
So you would have given up Brown, a prospect and a pick so you could have the honor of paying Havlat $6 million a year?
It would have improved the Kings.......a little. But the payroll would look attrocious. The would almost guarantee the Kings would be bumping into the cap.

hate to say it...but the Kings wil go as far as the kids take them....form the looks of the roster now, if the Kopitar, O'Sullivan play well, the kings will do much better...but regardless, i'm just excited to see the prospects develop....
an ideal gameplan which makes the Kings true Cup contenders by 2009....
2007: O'Sullivan scores a bunch of goals...Kopitar gets lots of points...Cammy, Brown and Gleason continue to develop....but we lose enough to get a top 3 pick (hopefully)....we lose Miller and Sopel's contract and sign a useful guy in the offseason
2008: as an up-and-coming team with young talent and several good veterans we make a push in the Playoffs and make it to the 2nd round or so...then we lose more big contracts (Blake, Matti, Conroy, Thornton), and replace them with a couple very good players....
if all these things work out, we should be able to be a very good team by 2009

Those are my hopes....and expectations. I just think too many Kings fans seem to be having unrealistically high expectations of this team for the 2006-07 season.

If you think that a 10th place finish in the West (and this is optimistic) is unrealistically low you need to check the rosters in the West again. Minnesota is better than the Kings. I believe that Columbus is better than the Kings.....Chicago just made a case for finishing within 10 points of LA. St.Louis is the only team in the West that finished below the Kings in 2006 that I can feel confident of the Kings finishing ahead of in 2006-07.

I think you're right about Columbus...I think this is their year.
I don't think Chicago is going to be all that better, even with their new 6 million dollar man. And I think all of these FA signings that Minnesota made are going to have a Penguins-esque effect on their team for next season.
Now, none of this means the Kings are going to finish in the top eight. However, I fail to see why this team is definitely going to be so horrible next season. Forget that argument of Buffalo and Carolina and Anaheim not being expected to compete (as valid an argument as it is); at this point, the Kings are pretty much where they were at the start of last season minus Demitra and plus Blake. That team was able to rack up a 2nd overall standing for a half a season until issues, which were presumably related to negative intangible surroundings caused the dynamic to break down and the team to plummet. As things now stand, many of the perpetrating factors of that aforementioned environment have been eliminated...and management has made some moves in signing and trading for people that they think will create a more positive surrounding for team as a whole. On top of that, all of the teams' young players and prospects have one more year of experience.
I'm not saying that Kings are going to take the conference next season, but I don't see why it's so unrealistic to think that they will be fighting for a playoff spot down the stretch.

I agree with this assessment. With our lack of offense, I could easily see us finishing near the bottom in the west. The only thing that'll prevent this would be breakout years from Frolov and Brown or maybe Sullivan, although I have serious doubts he'll make any kind of significant impact this year.

I don't think it is unrealistic to think the Kings will be fighting for the 8th spot even until early April. But that is pretty much where they were last year....and the season before......and the season before that......

anything that softens up the sharks D is ok by me...

Yes, they have been...but with the right mentality or attitude infused on every level of the organization, maybe they can finally move forward from that.
