Gomez?

Any chance he is moved? Would New Jersey have to get a center in return?

There is a chance he could be moved, and yes, a center must be coming back if that was the case. Possibilities that could be possible if a move is necessary include Stoll from Edmonton and maybe Comrie from Phoenix.

Yes there is a chance he will be moved. We'd probably need a second line center in return.

you'd also need cap room, expect picks and prospects...

With White's signing, the chances of Lou retaining both Gionta and Gomez are slim. Giontalooks like he might be willing to accept less than market value so Gomez would be more likely to be dealt.

If NJ does not recieve at least a viable center for their top line (not necesarrily a 1st line center, but somebody that can fill in for a year) they are in trouble. With that said though, it most likely will be somebody cheap seeing as how salary is the reason Gomez is headed out.

Lou's a smart guy. He's the GM of the Devils. He knows the holes that need to be filled on the team. Do you honestly believe he will deal Gomez w.o getting a center in return? I highly doubt it. I think he would rather package a 1st Rd. Pick w. Mogilny and send him to some team well below the cap floor. Gomez is too important a guy to just cast off. We have several other options to create some cap room.

I'm not so sure of that. Gionta didn't opt for arbitration which leads me to believe he and Lou are relatively close to hammering out a long-term deal. Likewise, Gionta's younger brother is in the Devils system which would likely be a decent incentive to stick around.

It will be interesting to see what Lou does this off-season - I thought he was screwed last year but he managed to find a way out of it. I don't see any easy ways out this year but I wouldn't be shocked if he found a way.

In regards to Phoenix and Gomez, why exactly would they be interested? Phoenix already has Reinprecht, Comrie, Roenick, Ricci, Scatchard, Kvasha and Devereaux at centre. Granted some of those guys can play the wing but is there really any need to acquire another centreman given Reinprecht's chemistry with Doan and Comrie's strong play?

I would love to see Gomez on the Oilers and both sets of fans have been kicking around a proposal centering around Stoll + a pick for Gomez. It makes a lot of sense on the surface for both clubs if New Jersey has to cut some salary and if Gomez is willing to resign in Edmonton. Of course, I have no clue if Lowe would even entertain moving Stoll in a deal.

Kvasha and Devereaux are UFA's and likely not coming back. Roenick will likely be asked to play wing. I think the Coyotes are looking for an upgrade on the first line with Comrie being the bait.

Something like Comrie, Spiller and a 2nd?

Why wouldn't Reinprecht play on the top line next season given his success in that role with Doan last year?

How good is Spiller? All I know is from my video game, and it's that he's big.

Calder sounds like a reasonable option. I don't often get to see the Blackhawks, but wasn't he a 55 point center last season? More info would be appreciated.

I've always liked Calder. Seems like the hard-working type of guy Lou would like. He could probably put up 60+ points on a line w/ Elias? How good is he defensively? Can he play center?

Isn't Parise a natural center?

Yeah but he had a rough time starting out the year there last year. He wasn't strong enough and couldn't handle the defensive responsibility. He was moved to left wing and did a lot better. He may be able to handle it this year but even in a best case scenario we'd have a second year player as our #1 center and a weak (for a scoring line player) center on our second line.

We're not looking to replace Gomez with a player of his caliber, just someone that wouldn't look too much out of place as a #1 center.

Counter-proposal...

To PHX: Gomez, Matvichuk, NJ's 2nd in 2007 and 4th in 2008
To NJ: Comrie, Spiller, PHX's 1st in 2007

Would the Devils at all be interested in Stephen Weiss? He seems like the type of player who would fit perfectly into the Devils' defensive system. Weiss is very close to breaking out, but Keenan would probably rather have someone more proven and playoff-tested, such as Gomez, instead of young Weiss.

He doesn't play center much but I'm sure he could easily adapt. but plays great D and is amazing in the corners and brings 110% every night.

Do you need defense? Or prospects? What your 2nd need if Calder is going the other way?

I was thinking Duncan Keith. We have to many defenseman right now.

The Devils have like no defensemen prospects, so a young d-man/prospect d-man would definitely be good.

I'd take that deal.

I'd rather move Rafalski at that point. If we take a step down at forward or defense with a trade I think we're still making the playoffs for sure. If we take a major step down on offense to slightly strengthen our defense it becomes a struggle to make the postseason.
