This could be argued. But it could also be argued the other way.

Perhaps you forgot, but Cloutier got injured last year and Auld played in almost 70 games in his absence, and performed quite admirably. He is still only 25 and should be making considerable improvements over the next few years. This isn't to say that he's better than Luongo, but to discount him completely after such a short amount of time is foolhearty.

And no one called him great, smartguy.

Nowhere does it mention that he is a Panther fan. You Habs fans are god-damned geniuses!

Great argument, BTW. We haven't made the playoffs because our fanbase overrates players? Damn, no wonder!

Oh and Luongo for Bertuzzi (5,3m$ for a overate player) and Alex Auld is the worst trade that i saw since i m following hockey. Vancouver would have pay to get ride of Bertuzzi and his contract. Luongo was the best goaltender in the NHL and for years to come.
Don't forget Bryan Allen. And there are some Panther fans that might agree with you. Just out of curiousity, what is this supposed to mean, anyway? That since Mike Keenan traded away Roberto Luongo (in the midst of dead contract talks, I might add), we are somehow inferior as fans?

Les Habitants are funny!

Every Montreal proposal I see excluding this rumor, I always end up seeing Aebisher's name or Zednik's. Keep the rejects with you because no one wants them. And the guy just said that Auld is a starting goaltender not a GREAT one, and I tend to agree to that. He is a starting goaltender based on what he did last season. He's more of a starting goaltender right now than Aebisher is. Oh, and its rude to laugh at one person based on what he posts, and on top of that to take a run at his team for not making the playoffs.

Fact is that Aebischer + prospects/picks for Bouwmeester is not going to get you anything more than the sound of phone getting slammed shut. Unless you include like half of the prospects in your top10 that is.

The difference between Auld and Aebischer is not that great, Auld played very well in Vancouver when Cloutier was injured. And Florida has plenty of options to get a goalie better than Aubischer anyway.

Back on topic, I was wondering the same thing. Legace is practically begging teams to sign him and Keenan is playing his famous contract-head games with both Legace and Belfour. Why on Earth would Keenan want to trade for Aebischer when he could sign Legace for 2 or 3 years at dirt cheap?

The opportunity to trade Aebischer has been lost for the present. Aebischer will not be easy to trade because so many goaltenders were (and still are) available. I guess Gainey wants to keep him around in case Huet is injured or has a bad streak. Aebischer will become a UFA at the end of the season, and I expect Gainey not to re-sign him because Danis can replace him as a backup goaltender after he has accumulated one more year of experience as a starter in Hamilton.

The only who works in favor of Aebischer it's that he's cheaper and younger than the other goalies available on the market (Giguère, Nabokov, Legace, etc.)

Agreed. Further to that, I can't help but think all of these Aebischer trade "rumours" read more like blogsperts posting their own thoughts on who might be going where, because it sure doesn't sound like the kind of thinking we would expect from Bob Gainey. Keeping Aebischer around as our insurance policy on Huet still figures as the more natural Gainey move, IMO. If space aliens landed tomorrow and pointed a death ray to my head and told me to bet on whether Gainey was trying to trade Aebischer or not, I'd pick "not".

I'm not convinced trading Aebischer was a priority of Gainey. I'm sure he explored it and if the right offer came along then he would pull the trigger, and it still could. But really, I don't think Gainey would be too upset starting the season with both Huet and Aebischer for various reasons.

If Huet plays well this upcoming season, which I think he will, then Aebischer will be dealt. The perfect comparsion we can use is Roloson last season. UFA goalie who has playoff experience and won't cost you much on the cap. Gainey is in a good situation with Aebischer both as an insurance policy and trading chip.
