My vote goes to Avery, he just seems like one of those punks who wouldn't know if he was being insulted.

I've met Avery. He was a really nice guy and we had a pretty decent conversation. He wasn't stupid at all. He knows what he's doing and he knows what his job is. Therefore, I'm using the same theory as you. He isn't dumb.

Well of course he doesn't believe he's Swedish. But trying to pass himself off as a Swedidh guy wasn't the brightest idea....particularly since he didn't speak Swedish or know thew capital of Sweden. Also, theres the little matter of him not looking anything like Lilja. I'd like to have seen him trying to explain that...."hey, ummm, yeah,I got a wicked tan....and, um these vitamin supplemments made me grow for inches and gain 40 pounds..."

Hahaha.

"Im not usually a black man ... its just fancy dress"

There is one similarity between him and Lilja. Niether can play hockey very well.

Stupidest player is Aki Berg. Man with the tools he had, why did he leave again?

Al Iafrate by his own admission - not a smart man.

when asked at an all-star game about his cannon shot and if it he thought it was better to keep the shot low or high when trying to win the hardest shot competition this was his anwser:

"well...you know, umm im not really sure (starts using hand gestures to show puck trajectory) ahhh..i dont know im not exactly the smartest guy."

You guys quit making fun of Smyth's interview style!

Only Oiler fans can joke about his "obviously" cliched interviews. We love the guy and he is all heart, but articulate, errr, not so much.

The trouble with most pro atheletes is that they know every thing they say is recorded forever and they have to be very careful in what they say, so they end up resorting to the same tired polictically correct cliches. I think interviews are a poor guide to the persons personality in a lot of cases. Some players have been burnt and purposely play it close to the vest all the time.

On the other hand, if you watched Kevin Lowe in an interview 20 years ago you knew that he was a lot brighter than most of his fellow NHLrs. I think the interviews can show intelligence, but they can hide a lot of it as well, depending on the players willingness to participate openly.

Actually, I don't know if intelligence is important in being a good hocky player, in fact, in some cases it might be a obstacle.

No way does Gino belong on this list. The man spoke three languages and was one of the best quotes the game has ever seen.

.

He's dumb as a sack of bricks. Even his father said he's lucky to have a career in hockey because he sure was going anywhere through school.

He's still a good hockey player, even if he is borderline retarded.

Yea, sure because players are not allowed to compliment their own team-mates.

Not sure if Mibury holding his job all those years and trading away great player after great player makes him the dumbest, or the smartest?

He skated over to the Wings bench and yelled "GOAL" and then spelled it S-C-O-R-E.

If you are going to tell the story, tell it right:

When Scotty Bowman was coaching the Blues, he was jaw jacking Eddie Shack about being dumb. Shack said something back to Scotty about scoring a goal. Bowman replied, "Score a goal? You can't even spell goal." Shack scored and while skating passed the Blues bench did his best spelling bee: Goal: J-O-A-L!"

Worrell/Lilja incident cements my vote for Pete, but here's an interesting Jovanovski story.

My uncle is best friends with the guy who used to be the Panther's equiptment manager so he got to attend a practice during the off-season between Jovanovski's first and second year. They are outside of the rink and Special Ed drives up and lowers his window.

Jovo: Hey Steve, I forgot my shin pads, do you think you have any i could use?
Steve: Sure Ed.

Jovo drives a few feet then stops, puts his head out the car.

Jovo: Umm, do you have any of my sticks here?
Steve: Yeah.
Jovo: Ok, cool

Jovo drives a foot, stops, puts his head out.

Jovo: Uh, Steve?
Steve: Did you bring [I]any[I] of your equipment, Ed?
Jovo: I have my helmet.

If you named Jacques Demers because he is or was an illiterate then I suggest you inform yourself.

Being illiterate not = being dumb

in fact, it requires you to be smart to keep it a secret for such a long time.
he managed to win the jack adams twice, hes got a stanley cup ring.. now.. i dont know about you, without bragging but id say im doing just fine in the iq-apartment and yet i admire this guy for what hes done in hockey and how he managed to keep his life on a straight lane even with his handicap.
i wouldnt excactly call it being "dumb"

I call Bulls***t. I have met Gino. Backstage at a Bon Jovi concert years ago. He is far from the dumbest jock/hockey player I have met.

He was part of a group that purchased the Musqeaum Golf course, and is fairly sharp actually.

$5 says you have never met the guy, and based your opinions on the way he talks or looks.

Now thats dumb
