Underrated and overrated: UsaToday.com Niinimaa overrated..

Underrated and overrated

The overrated list features players whose value is overstated, most often by the media and the team's fans. Neither one of these lists is meant to be exclusive, and the players are listed here in no particular order. Have fun agreeing and disagreeing with the names on both lists.

9. Janne Niinimaa, New York Islanders: Niinimaa is just not as talented as the Islanders' press and fans would have you believe. He gets beaten wide a lot, and makes some, er, interesting choices with the puck in his own zone. Don't you think Mike Milbury would rather have Eric Brewer, Bryan McCabe, Bryan Berard, Wade Redden and all those other defensemen he dealt away, rather than Niinimaa?

For right now I'd take Niinimaa over Brewer, McCabe and Berard.

Montgomery is a clown IMO, and half is list is wrong.

I did expect Niinimaa to be steadier.Still he's a very good defenseman.

Brewer-even the biased CP has started writing that Brewer struggled last season and to start this season. He makes $2.5m and according to some posts i've read,is looking for $4m a yr next summer on his next contract after seeing redden+Jovo sign for $4m-$5m a yr.

McCabe-another nyi defenseman who I don't mind losing.good physical player, but not nearly as good as the Toronto media makes out.

Redden-this is the one I really regret the isles losing.

Chara-Isles would still be struggling without Yashin.I can't whine about that trade.Have to give to get.

Dumb Post. Niinimaa hasn't played great, but he's played good hockey. I would take him over Berard, definatley take him over Brewer not to mention we wouldn't have Hamrlik if we still had Brewer (yes Hammer hasn't played up to par, but he is still a great defensman). Chara has become an excellnt defensman, but he was a big goof on skates when he was here and as Crew stated you have to give to get, Yashin is a major reason why we are off to the good start this year. Redden is an excellent d men wish we could have him back though

I've never heard of this writer but he seems like someone who has no idea what they are talking about. He has Brent Sopel as underrated - he was pretty bad last year and many Canuck fans want him dealt, and calls the Sedin twins as 30 point players, when they are still only 23 and developing and Daniel is on pace for 70 points so far. If he says Niinimaa is overrated, I don't believe him.

Overrated

I don't think it is the New York media that has overrated Niinimaa, but the Canadian media. He was the best thing Edmonton had, I guess. I like his passion, and, yes, he could be better. He was hurt when we got him, so maybe this is a carryover. Better him than Isbister, anyway.

true

Niinimaa is defenitley overrated. In my opinion he is the Islanders fourth defenseman. It was defenitley worth giving Izzy up for, but the only thing that hurt was giving up Torres especially after the success he is having this year.

talentwise I'd rate Niinimaa below Hamrlik+Jonsson, but above Aucoin.

I haven't been impressed with Niinnimma at all......even before I read this article. Maybe it's his pairing with Cairns or his limited PP time or it's all on him alone but to me he hasn't come close to the hype that surrounded his arrival.

I stopped taking that article seriously when I got to the Paul Mara paragraph. He asks what were the Lightning thinking in trading Mara for Khabibulin...Um? About making the team a lot better REAL fast? The guy lives in another reality.
