The answer is obvious, Guy laces up as player-coach.

I hope that is not a line you want to see. Kovalev is not a match for those two. He hasn't been a good match with Ribeiro. Samsonv style or his puck distribution is not a match for Kovalev. Who is a '"Regarde moi aller'' style.

Pleks
Johnson
Grabovsky
Bonk
Kovalev
Higgins

If it gets past plan G.......trade one of the impending UFA defencemen and Ribs for a center.

I'd like to think that if Kovy doesn't want Ribs centering him, he doesn't get Ribs centering him.

I would really like to see Grabovsky with Samsonov and Kovalev. Could be a nice fit!

I'm thinking this line could very well fail, and not because of Ribeiro!

I think a line with Samsonov and Kovalev together will be an extremely frustrating line; both are players who love to control the puck and try to deke the entire defence. The two of them on the same line could create tons of turnovers and I wouldn't be surprised if they'd rarely ever play together through the year.

put kovalev back up with koivu
higgins-koivu-kovalev
samsonov-ribeiro-ryder
perezhogin-plekanec-johnson
murray-bonk-begin
These would be my ideal lines to start the season if no rookie makes the team. Samsonov is known as more of a passer and thats exactly what ryder need to score. Kovalev can create his own scoring chances and paired with koivu will only become more deadly.

I agree. Now that we have Samsonov, we can have Kovalev paired with Koivu.

I would change Ribeiro for Bégin.

The two Russians will see what it is to have Heart and determination, damn.

What about:

Perezhogin - Koivu - Kovalev (pretty good for a while last year)
Samsonov - Ribeiro - Johnson (Johnson works well with talented smaller forwards)
Higgins - Plekanec - Ryder (Higs-Pleks played together in the AHL, add Ryder to the mix)
Begin - Bonk - Lapierre

You dont know they usually play together in International tournaments?

Grabovski is probably plan B at this point imo, a russian type to play with Russians. Or Kovalev himself at center and Kost on the right wing.

Exactly! Players like Samsonov need snipers on their line to compliment their playmaking abilities. While Kovalev is a sniper, he's also more of an all-around offensive threat while Ryder's strong suit is purely his shot.

Even if they do, it's a different game in international tournaments and in the NHL.

Another Plan B :

Higgins-Koivu-Perezhogin
Samsonov-Kovalev-Ryder
Rookie-Plekanec-Johnson
Begin-Bonk-Murray

Scratch : Ribs

Sure, but they may have some build up chemistry already and its the first thing Gainey told about the Samsonov pickup on the news. "He played with Kovy in Turin"

I agree Samsonov-Ribeirov-Kovalev might be a problem. Kovalev will have to shoot!

Samsonov-Kovalev-Kostitsyn would work well imo, with Kost being told too shoot with the 3 seconds rule.

Wasn't it Kovalev who preferred playing alongside Ribeiro? Either way, I think he and Koivu work best together.

Samsomov - Koivu - Kovalev is enticing, I'd just hate to break the chemistry was red hot with Koivu and Higgins. Kovalev does a good job of handling the puck- same as Koivu... Higgins likes being around the net for "garbage" goals. That could work.
Samsonov - Ribeiro - Ryder would worry me, pretty much zero defensive awareness. Could put Pleks in the middle, but the Perez/Pleks chemistry. lol

Hopefully the lines get a good workout in pre-season and it becomes clear what's clicking. I don't want to see lines changing for most of the season.
