Tretiak, head of the Russian federation, announced on June 17 approximately that they were accepting the transfer deal with the NHL and would have a formal signing very soon. Since then nothing has happened and individual teams, who wield a lot of power, are still resisting the deal, including Malkin's team. If anyone reads Russian they might go up on the hockey forums and ask someone. Nothing is coming through in English that I can see.

Malkin will need a pretty sweet contract. Like Crosbys I think it has bonuses up the wazoo. And bonuses get added immediatly to the teams cap.

There's a maximum of bonuses you can get, and of course Malkin will get the maximum, as did Crosby. Malkin will get a higher base salary though.

Rookie's can only get so much...base salary and bonuses. I'd be surprised if Crosby didn't get the max and Malkin can't get more than that

Pittsburgh is way below the floor so it doesn't matter.

he can get a higher base salary because he can get the rookie max from his draft year prior to the lockout.

Yes, Malkin will get the maximum from the 2004 draft year of about 984k (same as Ovechkin); where as Sid gets 850k.

Ovechkin's cap number including the bonuses is $3,834,200 for 2006-07.Malkin will get a similar deal.Sidney Crosby's cap # for 2006-07 is $3.7 million including the bonuses.Pittsburgh could potentially have $7.5 million tied up in Crosby and Malkin if they fulfill all of their bonuses which is more than 25% of the $28 million floor

A player like Malkin is going to get the max of $984,200 in salary and SB(which can't exceed 10% of the max) and another $850,000 in "A" bonuses and another $2 million in "B" bonuses.$3,834,200 in total

If Malkin became available because Pitt doesnt have the $$$$ to work a deal with Malkins Russian Club, What prospects would the Rangers have to trade to get Malkin. I would start with Marc Staal.

I don't think it will happen but if we get a shot at Malkin, I would like to somehow keep Staal, he's our franchise defenseman, I'd be willing to give up 2 firstrounders for Malkin that's for sure but rather just give up one no knock on Malkin just that I want to rob the pens

I'm sure Staal would have to be part of any package to land Malkin... I'd hate to see Staal moved in any deal, but if there is a player I'd be willing to package him for, it would be Malkin.

The NHL does not want their clubs negotiating directly with the Russian clubs to gain the players release from Russia. It defeats the purpose of having a transfer agreement in place.Without the transfer agreement, the NHL will have to pay European football style transfer fees. The NHL doesn't want that

The way I understand it, there are all sorts of issues with these Russian contracts. Legally, it's possible that the russian contracts aren't worth the paper they're printed on. Or, it's also possible that each NHL team would have to negotiate with each Russian team to get each player over if they're under contract. Rather than battle it out in a protracted legal fight in a 2nd world country, the NHL would much rather reach an agreement with RSL. However, there is no guarantee that an agreement will be reached, and there is no guarantee that the individual RSL teams will respect any agreement and force a legal battle anyway.

This will get done

Quote:
Putin is a huge hockey fan and he wants nothing more than to see Russia win the 2007 World Hockey Championship tournament in Moscow.

And the best way to make sure the Russians can assemble a contending team is to have peace with the National Hockey League. And that's the backdrop to why Russia has tentatively agreed to join the NHL-IIHF transfer agreement.

Putin told new Russian Ice Hockey Federation President Vladislav Tretiak that he expects Russia to atop the medal podium at the world tournament next spring. Anything short of wining on home soil will be unacceptable
.

If it doesn't get done,Putin will just throw them all in jail. That's no joke He has been a little pre-occupied with more pressing matters

I'd be wary about calling Staal the Rangers future franchise defenseman. Does it look like he's gonna be a good one? Yeah it does. Franshise D? not quite...

He looks like he could be the Rangers leader on D for years to come, but he's not quite franchise level.

Malkin on the other hand could be the Rangers franchise center, if they landed him. So honestly I think I'd do that trade. It'd take more than just Staal though.

We'll see, Levitate...

I think that Staal may've jumped up to a near franchise tag last season after his performances at the WJCs and in juniors. A top pair, shut-down defenseman who's developed offensive talent is near-franchise. He doesn't approach Malkin yet, admittedly, as he was drafted with a franchise label and has done nothing but reiterate that label, but he's developing into one.

I'm quite sure 28 other teams wouldn't want to rob the Pens and therefore would counter with a better offer than one or two 1st rounder...
