Anyone want Wiemer back?

Placed on wavers today by Milbury. Makes $1.6 mill, but would add a lot of grit to this team. Hey we got Val back from the Van Ryn trade, how about Wiemer back from the Mezei trade?

I would love to see the Panthers play the Islanders with Mezei and Wiemer in the lineup...great job Milbury

He would be a good pickup, as he brings a lot of grit and toughness to the young Panthers. However, I think his $1.6 million salary will probably stop us from doing anything.

Nah. He's a good 4th liner but he's also a PIM machine. Plus he's got hands of stone and a Rodeo Dr. price tag.

Mmmmmm, music to my ears... :p

Two defensemen that might be in our Top 4 for a long time,
Van Ryn for a 5th rounder.......
Mezei for a guy that is put on waivers a year later.....

Thank You Dudley!

Wiemer is definatley better than a 4th liner, and is exactly what this team needs right now, but his 1.6 pricetag is way too rich for Cohen's liking, no matter how much he'd add to the team. It's a shame too, because I'm sure Dudley would love to claim him and laugh a few years from now saying he got a top 4 (possibly top 2) defensman for free.

Weimer could replace Ritchie on the fourth line or move to the left wing. He adds leadership, and he'll stick up for him teammates. I wouldn't mind seein him fill the role of Skrudland as the checkin line center.

Way to expensive. We already have enough 3rd & 4th liners. We could get cheaper vetren checkers if we need them.

I like Jason too but we all know that he won't be back because of his price tag.

Plus we have Ritchie and Macdonald, who are both coming along like a Wiemer, but faster speed though IMO. Ritchie has shown flashes of better offensive too.

How does making a claim on a player whos on waivers work again? Is it the first team to make a claim gets the player or is it according to where the team finished last season in the standings (positioning) getting first "dibs" on the player (first Carolina, then Pittsburg, then Columbus, then Florida, ect..)??

Same as the draft standings, minus the lottery switch.

And for those complaining about the money, would you rather have Shvidki not produce at the AHL for $1.2 or Weimer lend a helpin hand in improvin this team at $1.6?

I say nab him. We might've found our physical 'veteran' presence, and while he is pricey, he'd be a great addition to the team, even on the third or fourth lines.

Is Shvidki making $1.2 million in the minors? I thought the Panthers signed him to a two-way contract, for one season.

Very odd. At the beginning of the season, we waived three players (Shvidki, Bednar, Novoseltsev). You'd think Shvidki would be the last guy sent down, based on salary alone (Cohen's way of thinking). That's why I assumed he was on a two-way contract.

I've never been a defender of Shvidki's, but let's be honest, here. Shvidki, though not tearing it up, is still one of San Antonio's top scorers and leads the team with a +6 +/- rating, last I checked. He's not useless, and probably as useful as Weimer at this point, with a lower salary and more "potential" upside (let's face it, Weimer's past the point of having the ever-elusive "potential", whereas Shvidki's still got a year or two where he could become the player he was expected to be - I stress, could ).

I think there's a list of players that would be affected, so this isn't a Shvidki vs. Weimer issue by any means. Shvidki is on the list, but so is Horton, Nedorost and other familiar names.

The biggest drawback to Weimer, as Heimy pointed out, is the PIMs. With Weimer, they are mostly due to a lack of discipline or poor judgment.

But he does have some value as a genuine physical presence. To paraphrase Dean Lombardi's favorite expression, you don't need to paint tiger stripes on him and tell him to be something he's not. His other assets, though, suggest that he could evolve into (not a scorer or a playmaker, of course) a Scott Thornton type. Thornton was regarded as a Weimer throughout his career until he showed well in Dallas and then got signed by the Sharks. Now he's viewed as an important player.

We also have Messier, who is a bigger upgrade over Wiemer too.
