Good price for the pens to get one of the young ones under contract.

Wow, a few posts went by without someone trying to trade him for scrap wood...this is a good deal, especially for a team that will rely on Mark Recchi and Nils Ekman as their new top 6 wingers. Back-to-back 20 goal scorer in his first two seasons...I'll take it...

Not as bad as I expected, but I think it is a little bit of an overpayment. Almost to be expected in arbitration though.

If Malone provided more than solely secondary scoring and was a little more consistent, this would probably be a bargain.

RangerBoy mentioned on our forum that the term was requested by the team, and since a two year term was awarded, the Pens couldn't walk away from this. They'd be on the hook for the first year, after which Malone could become a UFA.

I would guess that since we requested a two year deal, Malone is either in the long term plans or Shero thinks a two year deal makes him easier to trade.

He's a contributor on special teams, especially the PK which adds a bit to his value.

I was thinking he get more goal last year with Crosby on PP.

But i like that players, i've seen may be 6 games of Pittsburgh + the game against Montreal and i like he's play.

If we use him on the PK again this season I'm going to question Therrien's sanity.

Fair enough. He did produce some short handed goals, although I acknowledge that doesn't mean much if you're an inept penalty killer. In the current market I think Malone got what he deserved, and if he can get a little more consistancy he MIGHT hit 30 goals this year.

If he struggles early on, hopefully the Pens can move him before the rest of the league realizes that Malone provides very little aside from his highlight-reel goals.

Malone had 10 to Crosby's 16.

Don't doubt the drawing power of San Francisco East.

As far as i know when teams win their case they get them for 2 years. If the players win theirs they get 1 year. Or something like that.

I think the team is allowed to request either a one or two year deal before heading into arbitration. However, I'm not sure if this is true in cases where the player is set to become an UFA after one season(Briere, Gomez, York).

Actually, I believe that the player requests a length of 1 or 2 years from the arbitrator when he decides to go to arbitration. But this is done before the arbitrator makes his ruling. I don't think it has anything to do with who wins.
