Regehr or Staios?

Hey everyone,

An argument erupted on another board over who was better. Robyn Regehr or Steve Staios.

Here are the stats:

------------GP-----POINTS----GOALS----ASSISTS----(+/-)
Staios -----313------92---------24----------68-------(+40)
Regehr -----303------54---------12----------54-------(-13)

Staios has the statistical advantage. Is he the better defenceman?

Sadly, I'd have to take Regehr. Staios is decent, though.

Whoever is arguring for Staios is putting waaaay too much stock in stats. I thought he was downright awful this year, but his stats were good.

Anyways, isn't Staios like 8 years older than Regehr? It's like that guy who said Huselius was on par with Hemsky because their stats per game were similar.

The person who posted this thread must be dealing with one of these fantasy hockey newbies who analyzes everything by stats.

Anyone who has a decent understanding of the game of hockey could tell you who is without a doubt the better overall defenseman between Robyn Regehr and Steve Staios.

Staios is no slouch, but hes no Regehr!

To think that Staios can even be compared to Regehr in the same breath is funny enough. Staios has at least one breakdown a game. When he is good, he is good 3-4 dman on most teams. But his defensive breakdowns, which occur far too often, bring his stock down. Regerh is one of the most solid dmen in the league and arguably top 5 for a shutdown dman. He seldom makes a mistake. His +/- rating can be attributed to the fact the Flames sucked for 7 years.

Despite the fact that every Oiler fan has stated that Regehr is much better, I'm still expecting a Flames fan to make a post about how all Oiler fans are such homers for making such comparisons.

Actually, it is only one Oiler fan, and it is from a thread on Calgarypuck. The same Oiler fan also believes that Edmonton is better than Carolina. Everyone over there is simply laughing at the poor little fool. Not sure why his little delusion made it over here though.

Is it mudcrutch? The guy has the quirkest way of using stats for his arguments, a "lost art of math" as he calls it. Last year about this time, he used a quriky mathamatical manipulation (ESS%, even strength save percentage) to show Ty Conklin was the best goalie in the league (2003-2004) ahead of Martin Brodeur in even strength minutes.

I'm going to call you on that one. Where is this? MC may make your head spin with math and his claims may take some time to digest but he's not an dumbass as you've described.

in regard to this thread, I have to say that it should be closed. If no one is willing to do the heavy lifting to prove or disprove one must assume we're all in agreement.

Phaunthier is half right. MC tried to argue that Conklin was a very good goaltender by showing his "ESSV" was comparable to Brodeur. I do not remember if he actually said Conklin was better, but I doubt it.

Of course, this year, he has admitted that Conklin is crap, and is arguing that having Roloson as the everyday starter instead of Conklin makes up for replacing Pronger with a pylon.

I like MC's style, but his entire outlook, and therefore stats, are skewed by his belief that defense is massively overrated. Most of his articles push that agenda, which, IMO, means almost everything he says is fundamentally flawed. He is entertaining though.

Oh, and no, it wasnt MudCrutch. It was just a generic troll called "oilers".

To be clear, the claim I take issue with is "he used a quriky mathamatical manipulation (ESS%, even strength save percentage) to show Ty Conklin was the best goalie in the league (2003-2004)".

I await the link.
