2006-2007 Habs/Leafs combined team

As a huge Habs fan, I hate the Leafs. Why? Because they are the Leafs. It’s as simple as that. They’ve had a stronger team than ours for quite a few years now. It’s our turn to shine.

The purpose of this thread is to see what combination of players from both teams gives it the best chance of succeeding in the 2006/2007 season. Keep in mind injury tendencies, the need for defensive play and grit, forget about salaries. Although I hate the Leafs, I still have respect for them. They remain an original 6 team, they play with tons of heart and they have quite a few players that I’d gladly take on the Habs roster.

Here’s my Montreal/Toronto team. This is simply for fun. I understand it has no great purpose. Let’s attempt (barring the intrusion of Leaf fans on this board) to keep it civilized. We are both great hockey traditions with strong knowledged hockey fans.

FORWARDS:

Steen Sundin Kovalev
Samsonov Koivu Tucker
Higgins Wellwood Ryder
Begin Johnson Perez

Next in: Stajan, Pleks.

DEFENSE:

Kaberle McCabe
Markov Komi
Souray Kubina

Next in: Rivet, Dandenault

GOALERS:

Huet
Aebi

Quite the condending team!!!

Next in: Danis (note the exclusion of Raycroft).

THOUGHTS?

I'd go with:

Sergei Samsonov - Mats Sundin - Alex Kovalev
Alexander Steen - Saku Koivu - Kyle Wellwood
Chris Higgins - Tomas Plekanec - Darcy Tucker
Steve Begin - Mike Peca - Mike Johnson
*Stajan, Ryder, O'Neill, Perezhogin

Offense is perfect except we could use more firepower on this 2nd line. You can't find a 1st line better than that around the league, the third line has a nice mix of everything and our 4th line is dead scary. Depth coming out of our ears.

Tomas Kaberle - Bryan McCabe
Andrei Markov - Pavel Kubina
Sheldon Souray - Craig Rivet
*Bouillon, Dandeneault, White, Komisarek

Kaberle-McCabe is a no-brainer. Markov-Kubina I like, Kubina is able to play the physical side and is quite big, both are great in their own end and the pairing has a nice offensive touch aswell. Souray-Rivet is solid defensively and with Souray everything can happen offensively aswell, the perfect third pairing. Nice depth too. Markov and Kaberle are our version of the Ducks' Niedermayer/Pronger! Haha..

David Aebischer
Andrew Raycroft

It's all a moot point as no HabLeaf team would ever make it to a game in one piece anyway. They'd beat each other up at first practice.

A line with Kovalev and Tucker would be fun.

I appreciate that. Seriously. I have no problem with you hating us, and I really appreciate your praise of our team. The hate helps build the rivalry further. I also respect your team to the utmost.

Personally, I like the Habs as well. This is the team site I visit most often other than Toronto's (they're my team, after all...), and I absolutely love the conversation on this board.

It's not really a combined team when there are only 7 or 8 Leafs on the 20 man roster. A better challenge would be 10/10.

I have 12 Habs and 8 Leafs in my lineup, plus Raycroft as the third stringer. Like another poster said, not our fault if we have better players!

Funny to see that most of the posters have Johnson on their roster, while prolly none can recall him play a single game.

To all who have responded thus far...

I have to say I'm shocked so many Leafs rate on your merged team...Stajan and Tucker ? Kilger especially ! PFFFFTTTTT!
Sundin... i guess we need to lose our minds as we meld eh? What is his Senior Citizen Status again ? For how much ? Just Say No ...Thank You !
perhaps we could use Wellwood and Steen in Hamilton but that's it for the current roster players in Toronto making our team (Peca is overpaid so are McCabe Kubina etc. on the D we have a cap remember ? )
They will be better in the future as they have started keeping their draft picks and dumping the old and the brittle but my guess is JFJ doesn't last to finish making his own mark if (when!) they miss the playoffs again.

The best one IMO would be:

Ryder-Koivu-Higgins
Samsonov-Ribeiro-Kovalev
Perezhogin-Johnson-Plekanec
Begin-Bonk-Murray

next in: Kostitsyn, Sundin

Markov-Komisarek
Souray-Rivet
Bouillon-Dandenault

next in: Streit, Coté, Kaberle

Huet
Aebisher

next in: Danis, Pogge

Steen/Stajan-Plekanec-Tucker would be by far the best third line in the league.

samsonov-sundin-kovalev (obvious first line))
steen-koivu-higgins (steen has the speed which ryder lacks)
begin-peca-tucker (awesome checking line)
perezhogin-plekanec-johnson (superfast 2-way line that can beat you)

markov-mccabe
kaberle-souray
kubina-rivet

this defense puts anaheims to shame!

Peca makes a better third liner than Pleks.

Bit more defensive upside but less offensive upside... Less speed too if you ask me...
