apparently the Sabres have walked away from his award and he is now a ufa. no big suprise there .. now this is where it get's fun . no one is going to offer him 2.9 million a season nudda chance
id offer him 2.25 million for 3 years and lets get it done !!!
he'd loook fine in red
I would pass on Dumont. All his career he was a inconstant forward and playing with Briere sure gave a boost to his stats. He probably worth around 2M$ but i would prefer to keep this spot for a rookie. We don't need a other 50-60 pts winger.
I take it, since we dont need him, this is only academical. I would give him about 2½M. To put it into perspective, our own Canadiens gave 3.525 to Samsonov, who had similar year before lockout (40 points in 58 games 7 pts in 7 playoffs games) and again this year. Ryder will propably make that much if he keeps scoring around late fifties. Dumont could and propably will get more if he becomes UFA - I'm guessing with Penguins.
If it was two years ago, then i'd be all for it. Right now, i just don't know where he'd fit in. With Kovalev, Samsonov, Ryder, and Higgins riding the wings already on the top two lines, where do you put him.
Higgins could go third line but he had chemistry with Koivu, and you already have Johnson, Perezhogin likely on the third line.
The price is probably right, but timing is off imo.
I know, I know it doesn't seem a credible source but from a closed thead on the buffalo forum, Sabres would have walked away from the arbitration award for JP Dumont. He would now be a UFA. Again until a credible source or confirmation it is pure speculation but if it's true, I think BG should do anything to convince him to come to MTL. Any thoughts ?
I am partial to the idea of trying to assemble a Sabres-like team that can come at you from all directions. So I don't think that we lack a roster spot for Dumont. Is he better than Downey? Yes he is. Ergo, we have room for him. Not really as the 13th forward, but then with Samsonov and Koivu on our roster, I think there's a pretty decent chance we might have some games to fill in on the upper lines at times.
However, I want to carry 23 players with the team, and keep at least $1M overhead for the trade deadline. And I wouldn't be willing to move out any current players to make room for Dumont. (Basically, it would just erase any chance of Kostitsyn or others making the team). So that means he can only be worth $1.5M or so to me. If he'd take it, he's welcome, we can make room. But I don't doubt that somebody else somewhere will be able to offer more.
Let's concentrate on working on areas of need. Dumont is a good player, but to add him only creates work for BG. And for what? Let's continue to implement the good young forwards we have and work toward improving our blueline if needed.
This thread is interesting. If he gets less than his arbitration award, the award is more than market value and therefore, good evidence of the distorting nature of the arbitration process.
Teams have to go by cap space, usually because they've already overpaid for somebody, arbitration goes by comparison, so every year, a few more guys will get screwed. It should eventually serve to limit rfa prices wouldn't it ?
