Fair enough, just thinking out loud.

I agree Calder is probably better as a 2nd line player with Carter, however, Umberger just learned how to play on the left side last year and Calder is a natural left winger as well - one of them has to switch to the right and that makes me uncomfortable.

I'm disappointed to see Handzus moved, but I like this deal. The Flyers needed another winger and it was inevitable that Handzus was going to be dealt.

Is handzus married?
Because if he is his wife would have killed him if he got traded to edmonton...

Would have rather seen a top4 dman come instead but.....in the long run this will be a better trade for the Flyers IMO. Zues gives everything he has, very solid but he has logged a lot of minutes and games. while he is young I feel he may start to break downa little with nagging injuries. His value was proably never higher. good for both teams.

three words

I love it

Don't get me wrong - I liked Handzus. But this team needed speed and a LW and Calder provides both and he's pretty young.

Good luck Zues

bye

Great trade. I am still concerned about the defense, but the forwards are really starting to shape up. This team will score goals.

Now, as per usual, time to speculate on lines, and what exactly this trade means.

First, I think this trade means Geoff Sanderson was acquired to play with Richards. Richards needed a legit speedy winger to feed the puck, and at 1.5 million, you can easily justify Sanderson on the third line. That gives us cost effective depth. So, the theory's of Sanderson being the missing link as a top 6 winger appear to be incorrect.

Second, Calder is that guy. Heck of a player. I haven't seen him a ton, but enough. To me, he is kind of similar to Justin Williams. I think Calder ends up playing RW, but we'll see. Something of note is that Calder actually played on a line with Carter and Richards at the world championships in spring and they had success and formed a friendship. I know players say stuff when they are traded, but I honestly think Calder has got to be thrilled to get out Chicago and come here.

Third, either Gagne or Nedved is now gone. I am thinking Nedved. Calder COULD be Gagne's replacement, but I doubt it. One of the two is on the move though now imo.

Fourth, as I said not long ago, there is no place for Ben Eager on this team, this season.

Remember this with Calder. He was just awarded 2.9 million in arbitration. So the Flyers actually pick up 700K in this deal. Add that to Sanderson's 1.5, and you have 2.2 million. Before these moves, the Flyers had about 6 million in cap space. I think it is even more safe to say that Primeau is done.
Also, Calder will be an UFA at seasons end, but I see no reason why he wouldn't re-sign, maybe even before he becomes an UFA. This is a guy who should fit right in with this team's system and the players here.
Even IF he doesn't, Handzus certainly wasn't going to factor in past this season, and I have said all along he didn't fit in now.

Lines

Simon Gagne - Peter Forsberg - Mike Knuble
RJ Umberger - Jeff Carter - Kyle Calder
Geoff Sanderson - Mike Richards - Sami Kapanen
Randy Robitialle - Marty Murray - Niko Dimitrakos
Mark Cullen

That is pretty *** sick. Seriously, Calder is a great addition.
I do, STRONGLY feel there is another move coming, probably Nedved.

What about these for lines?

Gagne Forsberg Knuble
Calder Carter Umberger
Sanderson Richards Kapanen
Eager Robitaile Dimitrakos

Primeau retires, Nedved waived, the rest vie for backup/call up duty

We lost our best defensive offenseman. He was killer on the penaly kill and was also good on the offensive penalty kill. I think this trade hit me too hard. He was one of our best players. Its not always the player who helps offensively but the player who gives the best effort. Zeus was the man for tha job.

I prefer that fourth line to the ones everyone else has suggested. I like Eager's hitting (I do believe he'll mature if given time) and Robitaille and Dimitrakos are skilled enough to contribute and shouldn't be liabilities.

I think the top three lines you have there are all but set in stone. Anything else wouldn't make a lot of sense.

What about switching sanderson to the middle of the third line and putting richards on LW? Didn't Richards play LW on that line for a little bit?

I don't see Kappy as anything but a fourth liner these days. I'd rather see Nedved on that line than Kappy and let Kappy displace Dimitrakos.

I like those lines - how about this -

maybe flip Calder with Sanderson? I'm sure Hitch will play the two new wingers wherever they seem comfortable/work well in practice etc. The nice thing is we have a full stable of 4th liners - good ones too. Whoever is healthy and playing well gets in the lineup - makes for a VERY strong set of forwards - with or without Primeau. Kapanen could move down to the 4th and play great defense then move somebody up to the 3rd who can actually hit the broad side of a barn...

I forgot to mention - with decent health, this team has two really nasty pp units.

No Richards is definitely a centre, no matter what. He is essentially the new Handzus - top defensive centre that is expected to contribute offensively.

I agree with others that Carter should also stay at centre - but I'd like to see a powerplay unit of Calder-Richards-Carter, the line that played together at the World Championships.

Yeah, I loved Handzus because of his attitude and versatility. I wish the Flyers had waited until the season to trade him when teams would be more desperate after injuries. His value would have been at its peak near the trade deadline, I'd rather have waited. Furthermore, I worry about Calder's immanent UFA status, and fear he will walk away after the season, leaving the Flyers with nothing to show for it.

The only good thing about this deal is that now people will stop clamoring for Handzus to be traded.

I think this is both the smallest group of forwards the Flyer s have had in ages, but who cares, they all can skate

while he was our best defensive forward, he was also the most expendable amongst the forwards to get a winger like Calder. I liked Handzus and what he brought to the arena every night but I like this deal for us even better.

Calder is one of the few current Flyers i've seen i real life (he played in the SEL during the lockout) and what i saw makes me feel real good about this deal.

I don't like the Flyers (because of Clarke) but watch them sometimes because of Forsberg.

And I came to really like Michal !!

There's no damn way I'll watch the Blackhawks.
