In Red Deer there are two places to go for donairs, both owned by the same people:
Cleopatra's Cafe - Which is located in a strip mall on 71st street off of Gaetz (aka 50th ave)
Red City Donair and Pita - Which is located across from the Bank of Montreal & Movie Theatre on 49th street (which is a eastbound one way)
Red City is open till 3 or 4 am so you can go there after the bar and get a donair. Nothing beats a after bar donair with abunch of drunks.
@humantorch
Just give up, there are Zero good donair places in Calgary. It was the one thing I missed about edmonton the most when I lived there for ten years. I tried every ***** donair place in the city and not once could I even find something remotely close to a decent donair. Every time I came back to edmonton I would go straight to Queen on stony plain or order a super from roadrunner. I've been back in Edmonton for 3 years so maybe something has popped up since then, I would think it's possible just due to the sheer number of Halifaxians living in Cowtown. just my .02
What is it that you think Calgary is doing wrong? I have had Donairs in both Edmonton and Calgary - they are the exact same thing! I find more places in Calgary offer additional toppings and sauces, but you can still get your traditional style at many places.
Being from the Middle East i'm flattered you guys love Donairs so much. They're amazing As for the best ones I really liked King Donair on 34th by the Kit Kat place(don't really know what it is but...) and the Adult Movie Store() for years. Then again my family was close friends with the old owner before they sold it so I may be biased a little Queen Donair by/on (not too sure) Whyte is fantastic as well.
You can get a donair at Smijies in downtown Kingston, they call it the bellybuster. It's about 3.5 pounds of donair goodness, and about 18" long. To the untrained eye it looks like a piece of firewood. A guy I work with tackled one of these bad boys for supper and finished in about 40 minutes, of course he was no good for the rest of the shift, it seemed to put him to sleep.
Its been a long time since this thread has been posted in, hope its not too big of a bump.
I've been out of the country for a year and a half and haven't been able to get my donair fix (Swiss Donair was 3 blocks from my old place, I used to get 2-3 a week at peak times, ie: hockey season). Tonight my wife surprised me by making her own sweet sauce following a recipe she found online and much to my surprise it turned out great. A little thick and slightly too sweet, but when it hit fresh hot sliced beef from the kebab shop down the corner it nearly was perfect. Needless to say I was very happy, and will owe my wife many foot rubs and cunnilingus.
Now just to open my own donair place and introduce sweet sauce to the southern hemisphere and improve their bland, drab flavourless kebabs.
Seriously, nothing like a slurpee and a donair. Sigh.

May I ask a stupid question and ask what a donair is?
no kidding. these arent huge at all in the states. ive seen them around in Chicago at non-greek places but i dont eat that crap so it never interested me to find out the name. gyros are way bigger down in the states for the most part.
I'm with I am the Liquor, way too much info.
ironic he'd frown on such a term since hes the Liquor.
rubber buns and liquor!
doh!
Seeing as this is my thread, I should update. I'm currently really excited about the place on the corner of 91 st and 51 ave. Robert King? They are good for weekday lunch especially if he starts to recognize you. You start to get the daily "specials" then.
Tried out the place on Argyll and 75 st also, and I liked them too. I had their mixed meat one and it was a little different but really good.
I have yet to make it out to that place in Millwoods. I just don't go out there that often for food.
This may sound like blasphemy, but lately I'm less about the donair and all about the Shoarma. Nothing like being drunk at 3 in the morning and getting a fresh shoarma made by an 80 year old Turkish dude who doesn't speak a word of English.
Donairs in Edmonton...Mmm I miss them so much! Damn Toronto barely has any and plus they call it a Gyro instead! I used to eat my Donairs at Mama's Pizza or something like that at Millwoods Town Centre until it closed down. I may be coming back soon, and I've been wondering, do any of you know if any offer halal donairs? That would be great.
FYI bud... they are pretty much all halal now... in that area alone, Zaks in Millbourne, Amean Pizza on 34th, Quick on Argyll, Queen on 34th, Homestyles on 34th street all come to mind. Also theres a new place opening behind the Fas Gas on 66th street that will specilize in Kababs but also have Donairs...
I've got to get in on this one... Donair Stop in Wainwright. I've never experienced anything like it. Donair perfection. If anyone is passing through, check it out.
Anyone know good places in Calgary?
I work in the SE, but the NE is close enough to get to for lunch as well.
Calgary doesnt have donair stores does it? I thought it was mostly an Edmonton thing. Never seen any down there... its probably more Shawarmas like they have in Montreal or Toronto...
I have "converted" 12-15 guys to Simon King on 91 St. & 51 Ave

YES!! Finally someone mentioned "the best" donair place. Let me qualify my donair experience 30+ shops, 16yrs= @200 donairs. Simon King has it perfected; their meat is spicey, they steam the pita and you get a choice of 3 sauces!! I have buddy's form the North and West ends who swear about their local shop- until they try Simon King. A lot of Sher Park people are fans of Richards Donair, which is in the top three in my books. Richards started in Fort Sask in the early-mid 90's, then the North Side and Sher Park. He sold the Fort awhile back, their meat is solid! I have perfected the sweet sauce and regularly make a batch for the boys. Recently at a stag we made the stripper dig out a $20 bill out of a tub of Donair sauce!!! You can't make that stuff up!!
PS I bought 20lbs of Donair meat for my stag from Mr Donair on Stony Plain Rd & 163 St.
Been on HF for a while now, just registered to profess my love of Donair (plus now I can chime in on hockey!)...
First off, what happened to Charles Smarts? If he wanted out he could have came to me I'd carry on the franchise with honour... So many great memories at htat place past 2:00am. Either way, this WAS my #1.
Second would be Queen Donair on 50th St by the Wild West - what a perfect combination of the West and East. Either way the sauce is what keeps me coming back but sometimes they burn the beef - I always ask for the non-burnt stuff (its gotten tense at times when the whiskey's talkin).
Third is Queen on Whyte or Dukes by the Windor - both are worthy of respect. I think I give Queen the nod for the basic reason that my buddy and I were there one hard night and we seen the two hottest twentysomething girls making out hard right at the till - thats a sight I've never been able to get outta my head and being from the country it was mind blowing at the time - short skirts, lotsa groping, dyed blonde hair - WOW.
Anyway, now that I found this thread I will be going on a Donair tour next time I'm back in town. I guess I'm old fashioned and once I found my regualr places I just never gave the other joints the chance to earn my respect. Just for your info I've consumed well over 400+ donairs (14 years x an average of 3 donairs per month - conservatively), so don't think I'm a beginner by any means. I had my first donair about 14 years ago when I was sixteen taking driver's training in E-Town. Was hooked ever since. Its just nice to see I'm not the only one who's got addictions.
I'll be daydreaming about donairs dancing in my head at work today - at Fort St John. I might get desperate and try that recipe. Anyone know any places I could go to at John or Dawson Creek - I'm dyin here

I'd have to agree richards is my favorite i was told to go to famous in SHPK the other day so i did. While it was good nothing compared to Richards in my mind I'm going to get one right away mmmmmm.
