2007 UFA - Centers

Here's a list of centers who potentially will be UFA next year...

For those hoping to replace one of our centers (Koivu, Ribeiro, Bonk or what have you!).

I had originally only listed the most notable...

Pavel Datsyuk
Scott Gomez
Peter Forsberg
Daniel Briere

Joe Sakic
Michael Nylander (option)
Chris Drury
Mats Sundin (option)

Mike York
Michal Handzus
Robert Lang
Josef Vasicek

Ian Laperriere (option)
Martin Straka
Joe Nieuwendyk
Jozef Stumpel

Bryan Smolinski

And now I also added some less notable centers:

Radek Bonk
Petr Nedved
Jeremy Roenick
Dainus Zubrus
Tyler Arnason

Marcus Nilson
Pierre Turgeon
Patrik Stefan
Sergei Brylin

Vyacheslav Kozlov
Wayne Primeau
Jason Wiemer
Denis Arkhipov

Sammie Pahlsson
Wes Walz
Bryan Smolinski
Scott Nichol

And I have yet to figure out the status of the following centers:

Marty Murray (status?)
Trent Whitfield (status?)
Tommi Santala (status?)
Kevyn Adams (status?)
Mark Hartigan(status?)

Well let's take out the aging, obviously resigning with their current teams, and those whose options will be excercised: Lang, Sakic, Sundin, Nieuwendyk, Stumpel, Straka, Smolinski, Nylander, Datsyuk.

So really you're left with Gomez, Forsberg, Briere, Drury, York, Handzus, Vasicek, and Laperriere.

Gomez: Quality first line centre, will demand $7m+
Forsberg: Injury prone, will also demand $7m+ (of which you'll only be hit for $4-5 because of time on Injury Reserve)
Briere: I can't see him getting much more than $6m on the open market, assuming he plays well again this season.
York: Really not a first centre, but is a more reasonable (and cheaper) option for Montreal.
Handzus: I'm a big fan of his. He has hands and size, is a true power forward.
Vasicek, Laperriere: Both are really capped out as 3rd line centres, though we will have to replace Bonk, if he's not resigned.

Of the options, and given we may have to replace both Ribeiro, and Bonk, I like Handzus and Laperriere, or if we really feel we need to upgrade from Koivu, Gomez and Laperriere. Drury would be a good fallback, but I think he's overrated.

Not sure if he'd leave Buffalo (isn't he captain of the Sabres?) but I'd love to see Drury in a Habs jersey. Particularly during the playoffs. I can see him being the kind of player Gainey and/or Carbo might want on the team. The chances of getting him however.....

the thought of that makes me wet...add in MArkov and Emelin on D, and we'd have our Russian Fab 5.That would be sweet as hell.
By next February, there will be countless Datsyuk to MTL proposals!!

Koivu's under contract for another 3 seasons.. so.. yeah. I just don't see Montreal trading him away.

I'm confused. Is this a thread where I can bash Ribeiro or is that the other thread? I don't want to look silly and start bashing Ribs in the middle of a Koivu-bashing thread.

because Grabovsky hasn' proved anything yet. We will have to wait and see if he can crack the team first.

If we are to go after another center at least we should target one with SIZE

Am I the only one who doesn't want Datsyuk at all. I personally think he's the most overrated player here and he's not that fast, nor strong, or even a good two-way player. He also lacks the fiestiness we like to see. I see him as a more productive version of Ribeiro.

No way that we'll take an elite center ... We will just have 3-4 millions of free and we will have to sign Souray and Markov .

Markov will have 4-5 millions .
Souray will have 3-4 millions .

We will have to sign Higgins , Ryder , Komo and many young player who will need augmentation ..

new NHL = speed and skill...NOT size.

what has forsberg's size done for him (constant injury)? how about lindros? or thornton in the playoffs?

its the smaller centers like the yzermans, sakics and richards that put teams over the edge. not freaking handzus, lol.

Forsberg injuries have nothing to do with his size. Hes one crazy dude in the corner and he play beyond his body.

I can actually see us freeing up some cap room. I still see SOuray heading west and we'll probably get rid of Bonk.

I think Koivu/Plekanec will be our top 2 centers with one of Chipchura or Lapierre centering the 4th.

I think Gainey will be looking to add a third line center with size, speed and skill for next season..

Off that list I think Mike York would be the best option. He'd fit just right on our team. Koivu/Plekanec/York/Chipchura as our three centers would give us a lot of speed, offense and all four are very responsible in their own end.

Might be too early, but next year's team could be quite exciting. Ryder, Kovalev, Samsonov, Perezhogin and Higgins should all be back. Add to that Grabovsky and Kostitsyn aswell as grinders like Begin, Ferland and Murray. Lapierre can fill in at C and maybe Gainey will keep Johnson? That would give us:

Grabovsky Koivu Kostitsyn
Samsonov Plekanec Kovalev
Higgins York Ryder
Begin Chipchura Ferland
*Perez, Lapierre, Murray, Johnson

Would fit quite well under the cap, too.

Seems to be plenty of options...

Personally, I'd love to see either Chris Dury or Mike Handzus in a Habs uni...

Oh boy does Bonk suck. The guy puts up 2 goals the whole season but Ribs gets twice as many threads saying he sucked at half the price.
