Best

1. Kaberle (A total steal 4.25 as an UFA)
2. Lidstrom (Best player in the league)
3. Redden (Singed the right guy and not for too much either)
4. McCabe (Considering the other signings this one is not to bad at all)
5. Morris (Had to pick 5?, his contract is less sickening than the others below I guess)

Worst

1. Jovanovski (not 750k better than McCabe)
2. Johnsson (more than Kaberle lmfao)
3. McKee (Good defenseman not 4 million good though)
4. Kubina (Leafs had a hole and spent to much to fill it)
5. Chara (Hid behind a very good team, not that same in Boston)

Best 4:
1)Nik Lidstrom- He's the best d-man in the game so he's worth whatever
2)Tomas Kaberle-Looks like a bargain right now, he's better then his 2 teammates making more.
3)Wade Redden-I think 6.5 is solid value for Wade.
4)Derek Morris-I wouldn't call it a bargain, but it's hard to say 5 of these are

Worst 5:
1)Pavel Kubina- 5 mil is a lot for a guy that I see at best as a decent #2
2)Kim Johnsson-He'd be #3 on my underpaid list if he wasn't coming off an injury, but this was a huge risk for Minnesotta and that's why I think it's a bad contract.
3)Brian McCabe-Not a fan, never have been
4)Jovo-Coming off season filled with injuries and hasn't been #1 in Vancouver for a few seasons.
5)Jay McKee-Solid defensive defenseman, but 4 mil? Mitchell would be 5B.

Best:

1. Tomas Kaberle, a steal for 4 years
2. Kim Johnsson, better than McCabe or Kubina, good deal for Minnesota
3. Nicklas Lidstrom, best player at his position. Fact they signed him before July 1 is impressive.
4. Wade Redden, not bad for $1M less than Chara, also better than Jovo
5. Rob Blake, a top defenceman, not what he used to be though

Worst:

1. Ed Jovonovski, huge price tag for a guy that's not that great all around
2. Zdeno Chara, he's great, but the term is way too long for him.
3. Jay McKee, 2006 playoffs boosted his stock a great deal
4. Derek Morris, no way he's only $350,000 less than Kaberle and $1M less than Johnsson, awful contract
5. Willie Mitchell, horrible contract, term is awful too.

Both Kaberle's contracts were steals for their respective teams.

Best:

1. Lidstrom (worth it)
2. Kaberle (definitely seems like a bargain now)
3. Redden (also worth it)
4. Morris (2nd cheapest and only 3 years, so less of a risk)
5. Mitchell (didn't really want to pick a 5th either but it's 500k less than McKee at least)

Worst:
1. McCabe (5 years and a no-movement clause seal the deal here)
2. Jovanovski (more talent than McCabe but the results aren't $750k per year better)
3. Chara (not worth $1 mil more than Redden and again 5 years is too long)
4. Johnsson (concussion ahoy. Could well be a relative bargain in a couple of years though)
5. McKee (odd to put him in worst and Mitchell in best at first glance but I don't think he fits a top pairing bill. Helluva guy on the PK though)

Left off Blake and Kubina. I don't think the Blake signing was particularly wise but at least it's only 2 years. Kubina could have gone in over McKee or Johnsson but at least he's a lot better offensively than McKee and isn't coming off a major injury like Johnsson.

What about Zidlicky, he was signed early this offseason to a 4 year 3.35M contract.

A lot of other D were signed as well. I think he was just looking at the big dollar ones.

No ranking, but I can't for my life understand how Minny bet so many green ones on Kim! For 5 million dollars, I'd take Kenny J and his porcelain head instead!

Worst is Morris. He isn't even a top defenceman. Also bad are Mitchell and McKee who are very good defencemen but overpaid for what they bring.

Best is Kaberle's becuse he is a top D-Man making less then the others.

Not new signings, but for comparison purposes:

Scott Niedermayer, $6,750,000 (3 years remaining)
Chris Pronger, $6,250,000 (4 years remaining)

and both bargains on the same team!

You know the beauty of those 2 guys is that both make the other partner they will play with better and they combined (if healthy) cover 1/2 a game of defense. And!.....they play awesome.

How can you compare that to Kubina, Kaberle and McCabe who cost more and are crappy besides the powerplay.

Nicklas Lidstrom at 7,600,000 vs. Zdeno Chara at $7,500,000 (for 5 years!) is a joke.

Lidstrom is worth all that and more. Best D man in the game.

Chara was surrounded by elite, two-way players in OTT. Not so in Beantown, where his lack of speed and dexterity will be heavily exploited. Bruins fans will be regretting this contract for years to come (despite crowing about it now), and will be booing him by the end of his first overpaid season.

I don't get it. I watched every edm-det game in the playoffs and he was a non factor.

He was a smuck, a non-factor, a nada, a blip on the radar. Why is this guy the best d-man in the league.

2006 playoffs

1 g, 1a, -4

6 games

If Johnsson didn't clear the Minnesota physical test, then he wouldn't have been signed. Johnsson has never had any injury issues, except for this last one and from the sounds of it, it looks like it got repaired. I think that bringing in Johnsson from Philadelphia weakened the team a bit.

Mitchell's contract is absured.

The Bruins are idiots for signing Chara to such a big contract. There is no way that he is better then Pronger or Niedermayer. He is good but I would say that he is only worth 5.5 at most.
