Gameday: Pens at Sabres 11/14

GAME: Pittsburgh Penguins (3-8-3-0) at Buffalo Sabres (7-7-2-0).

TIME: Friday, 8 p.m. EST.

Just 14 games in the season, the Pittsburgh Penguins are falling apart. Already missing Mario Lemieux, the Penguins will be without leading scorer Rico Fata when they try to end an ugly four-game losing streak in a matchup with the Buffalo Sabres.

The Penguins endured a second straight lopsided loss Wednesday, as the New York Rangers fired 42 shots, their season high, against rookie goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury in a 6-2 victory. Wednesday's loss came one game after Pittsburgh was embarrassed 9-0 at Tampa Bay. The Penguins, outscored 25-7 during the four-game skid, are tied with Washington with a league-low nine points.

After allowing three goals or fewer in six of his first seven games, Fleury, the No. 1 overall pick in this year's draft, has surrendered 15 in his last three starts. He has given up a goal in the first three minutes in each of his past four games.

The Sabres are coming off a 2-2 tie with New Jersey on Wednesday in a game played at Blue Cross Arena in Rochester, N.Y. Maxim Afinogenov scored the tying goal with 6:58 remaining in regulation and Martin Biron made 33 saves for Buffalo, 1-2-2 since winning four of five.

"The atmosphere was awesome," Sabres coach Lindy Ruff said of the neutral-site game. "There was a lot of energy in the building. The fans were into it, and I thought they got treated to a damn good game."

The Penguins are 11-2-3 against the Sabres since the start of the 1999-00 season, including 6-1-1 at Buffalo.

STANDINGS (through Nov. 12): Penguins - 9 points, 5th place, 11 PB, Atlantic Division. Sabres - 16 points, 3rd place, 5 PB, Northeast Division.

TEAM LEADERS: Penguins - Fata, 7 goals and 11 points; Lemieux and Konstantin Koltsov, 8 assists; Steve McKenna, 49 PIM. Sabres - Taylor Pyatt, 6 goals; Chris Drury, 10 assists and 13 points; Andrew Peters, 61 PIM.

SPECIAL TEAMS (through Nov. 12): Penguins - Power play: 10.0 percent (7 for 70), 30th in NHL. Penalty killing: 82.1 percent (55 for 67), 20th (tied). Sabres - Power play: 17.1 percent (12 for 70), 12th. Penalty killing: 82.0 percent (73 for 89), 22th.

GOALTENDERS: Penguins - Fleury (3-5-2, 1 SO, 2.91 GAA); Sebastien Caron (0-3-1, 5.67). Sabres - Biron (4-3-2, 2.69); Mika Noronen (3-2-0, 1, 2.26).

2002-03 SEASON SERIES: Penguins, 3-0-1.

LAST MEETING: Jan. 21; 0-0 tie. At Buffalo, N.Y., Biron stopped 23 shots for his second straight shutout, and Caron made 34 saves for Pittsburgh.

ROAD/HOME RECORDS: Penguins - 1-6-1-0 on the road; Sabres - 3-3-1-0 at home.

You guys, like everyone else, should have no problems exploiting our joke of a defense.

And on this poll you have here, I voted for a Sabres regulation win. Something in the neighborhood of 4-2 sounds about right.

TBN on Miro:
http://buffalonews.com/editorial/20031114/1020611.asp

"I think when it comes a time when you can't count on your best players in critical situations, it's tough," Ruff said.

Ruff didn't rule out a scratch, but treaded lightly about it. "That is a very serious step when you got a player making the kind of money he's making," Ruff said.

The most glaring of Satan's statistics is his minus-10 rating. Of the 694 NHL players to have skated this season, he is 691st. He is on pace to finish at minus-51.

If a coach is gonna scratch his star, it would be Ruff. Hell if Jay was benched, Miro can't be that far behind. Don't think it'll happen though...

remember last season wehn the sabres were tied or winning against the pens and they came back with like 3 or 4 straight goals on mika with bout 4 minutes left.....yeah that sucked.

I'm gonna say sabres win since pens are hurting with injuries.

3-1 buffalo max, drury with 2

WGR reported that the Sabres will go with the same lineup that played the Devils, except that Noronen will be in goal.

Jay McKee left practice in a huff when told he'd be scratched again. He reportedly smashed his stick on the boards and left before the optional extra skating session. I think that's a good sign and McKee will take out his frustration on the opposition next time he plays.

Satan's also unhappy with Ruff's treatment of him.

It seems like the Pens can dress anyone and still beat the Sabres. But the Sabres play some of their best hockey when there's dissention in the ranks. I'm picking the Sabres to win 3-1 with Max notching another goal.

Yeah, and I'm unhappy that our 4.75 million dollar "superstar" is playing like the soft, overachieving, inconsistent ballerina I've tried to convince myself he's not.

Yep, always a good thing when two of your highest paid and best players aren't happy.

I think the message Ruff is sending is that uninspired play won't be tolerated. I partially agree with that, but the part I disagree with is that the message would be sent after sitting out one game, in McKee's case. Get him back in the games and see how he responds. You keep sitting out guys and they aren't going to want to play for you.

McKee playing uninspired hockey is still better than half the guys Ruff would send out there in his place, IMO.

Why doesn't McKee just go grab a box of tissues and cry about it in a corner? Seriously, this guy has played about as physical as Housley for far too long now. He needs to get pissed off royally and then hopefully he'll learn that he's gotta play like a mean SOB like he used to in order to stay in the line-up.

Well that went by fast.

Overall, an ok period for the Sabres. They're hitting and Mika is playing well, which are good signs. A couple of brutal turnovers though.

Another big crowd on hand tonight. Hopefully we'll come out with the "w".

AHL roster?
Let me see:
Koltsov - 1st rounder in 1999
Orpik - 1st rounder in 2000
Morozov - good player
Straka - very good player
Surovy - top prospect
Kostopoulos - top energy type player prospect
Caron & Fleury - 2 of the youngest and best goalies
Kraft - 1st rounder in 1998
Melichar - good young defenceman
Malone - good young forward prospect

This is not an AHL team.
It's a young REBUILDING team that has alot more potential then ppl think. Whether the Pens win or loose this year, they are developping them-selfs. They are not going for any cup and I am sure that Mario doesn't mind missing the playoffs (deep inside).
It's actually about time for these young players to become what they were supposed to.

Actually, it is the roster of an AHL team, but a very good AHL team.

None of those players have established themselves in the NHL, no matter how talented they are, so you cannot label them bonafide NHLers.

What does that say about your squad then?

That's the same arguement we hear everytime we win a game.
