Stars take shot at NFL, NBA, MLB with new ad campaign

http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/news/story?id=2999292

Unreal. How ********... Don't know what to say but WOW.

Whoever thought this is clever is an imbecile. Here are the 3 quotes:

Quote:
The message? "The only thing our refs shave is the ice."
Quote:
"One game a week? Is the N in NFL for Nancy?"
Quote:
"Maybe baseball should stop using the word sacrifice."
The worst way to sell hockey to Americans is to bash the 3 biggest American sports leagues!

Given the amount of bashing the NHL gets from so-called commentators who only talk hockey when something bad happens, the campaign gets two thumbs up from me.

Piss some people off, get a little angry, develop a little edge, and define your sport as something different, something elite, something that not everyone "gets".

Everybody whines on these boards that the NHL doesn't do enough to market itself, and to let people know about this wonderful game. Then they actually do something edgy and funny, and the first complaint thread gets started within hours.

I think it was quite amusing as well. I guess if it was one of those three poking fun at the NHL I'd have a different opinion.

Kudos to the Stars, NHL gets bad rep from the Americans when it's the other sports that have the biggest scandals.

*yawn*

The commercial has a point, especially when it comes to all the bull**** that goes on in the other major sports in this country.

Oh, but hockey isn't supposed to be controversial, is it?

I have no problem with being edgy or controversial. That's not the issue here.

Most American teams don't sell out every game. Aside from Buffalo, Detroit, Philly, Pittsburgh, Colorado, and maybe a couple more, NHL teams have very poor local TV ratings and not such great attendance. The NHL should be trying to promote the great things about the game - the speed, the aggression, the skill players - not bash other sports!

The average NFL/NBA/baseball fan who doesn't care about hockey is going to laugh at those commercials and is going to be more turned off by hockey than ever before. Plus, the whole 1 game a week argument is just dumb. And taking shots at the NBA because 1 guy got caught up in a gambling ring with the mafia (or whatever it was), is really low. It's not like the NHL hasn't had any problems and bad PR recently. Two words - Operation Slaphot. Remember the lockout? Bertuzzi? McSorley?

There are ways to be edgy and controversial that aren't stupid cheap shots like these ads.

Humorless? You're talking to a guy who has memorized some of Tommy Lasorda's post-game rants... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qZMDsE7t_EE (like this one which I love).

These ads just aren't that funny. The NBA one is a cheap shot, and the NFL one is ********. The only one I'm OK with is the baseball one about the sacrifice.

Not according to Mark Cuban:

Quote:
But Mavericks owner Mark Cuban didn't seem to mind, according to the Dallas Morning News.

"I think it's hysterical," Cuban told the newspaper. "Good for them. It's a fun ad."
And his opinion weighs more than yours.

Texas Rangers owner liked the baseball one as well:

Quote:
Even baseball was not immune, despite the fact Stars owner Tom Hicks also owns the Texas Rangers: Another billboard reads "Maybe baseball should stop using the word sacrifice," according to the Morning News.

Stars president Jim Lites said Hicks laughed at that one, the newspaper said.

LOL really... You just figured out that the opinion of a billionaire Internet entrepreneur, who is also the owner of the Dallas Mavericks and HDNet, is more valuable than some guy who posts on hfboards.com?!

Brilliant analysis there, Jussi.

Plus, Cuban is a hockey fan (he's from Pittsburgh and has twice tried to buy the Penguins). He's probably saying that because he'd rather not see this get too much attention, since the ads are pretty dumb and the NHL doesn't need more people hating or making fun of hockey.

Oh and as I said, I have no problem with the baseball ad.

Yeah. I'm going to take advice on what's considered classy from someone who throws around the term "********".

Here we go with another stupid debate from someone who thinks hockey should sell their game by not saying anything the slightest bit contversial. I suppose we should try and sell it by using the same old cliches that we hear every day in the NHL.

First of a Cuban is not an hockey fan. Only reason he tried to save Pens was because Pittsburgh awas his home town. Secondly I'm pretty sure he wouldnt mind getting tons of attention.

These are supposed to be taken as light hearted and funny. Here are the other slogans that appear on billboards as apart of this campaign.

-Ultimate Fighting. What a Little Friendly Sport.
-The Ticket Covers the Hockey. The Boxing is a Bonus.
-At 32 Degrees, water freezes and blood boils.
-Watch People Fight at Work.
-Their Whole Paycheck is Hazard Pay.
-Meet our Two Defenders Assault and Battery.

As you can see these aren't meant too be taken seriously.

Here's the PDF with all the billboard images.
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcont...billboards.pdf

Whoever came up with this campaign is probably getting a raise. It's gotten tons attention.

Those are so awesome!! It's great to see a pro-active approach to what many fans come to watch, whether us diehards like it or not, fighting and the rough stuff on the ice. Watch the crowd when a fight goes on, everyone is standing and cheering.

It's about time one of the teams in the NHL grew a pair of brass ones and not only started thinking outside the box but went after the other sports!

Awesome job!

I love the campaign and cannot believe anyone doesn't think those are amusing - some folks need to get a sense of humor. Nothing said in those ads is injurious to anyone - it's called poking fun.

The baseball one about sacrifice in particular is hilarious.
