I watched the top-10 overtime goals of the 1990s on the NHL Network this afternoon. #2 was Brett Hull's overtime winner to win the 1999 Cup Finals; now, say what you want about that one, but I found Bob Cole's call of the play to be one of the most unintentionally hilarious play calls I've ever heard.
"SCORE! Mike Modano... er... and Dennis Hu... er... Brett Hull gets it!"
It took Bob three tries to get the man's name right, and it's not like Brett's a nobody in the NHL either.
I have a funny story about the aftermath of that goal.....
that August I played in a golf tournament outside of Boston hosted by Paul Stewart for the benefit of Hockey Fights Cancer.
At the post-tournament raffle the emcee, a local announcer named Jimmy Young was presenting the next item, a hat signed by the Dallas Stars. Jimmy started his presentation by saying "Okay, who won last season's Stanley Cup?" I yelled "NOBODY!" which started the debate, so Young called Stew over to explain what happened and Stew's response was "Hey, ay 1:45am that's a goal because the bars in Buffalo close at 2:00."
Maybe you had to be there, but it's a typical response from a Boston Irishman. LOL
Get over it Buffalo fans! If you were so good you'd have won a Cup since your existence in 1970! And to answer your question yes I'm a Leaf fan and we havent been in the Cup finals since '67 but you'll never hear me cry about Gretzky's high stick on Gilmour in '93 and say it cost us the Cup. It didnt. We still lost game 7.
And Buffalo still lost 3/5 of those first games vs. Dallas and still somehow the "GREAT" team they were they couldnt muster out a goal in THREE OVERTIMES! Besides if your best forward is Mike Peca you dont deserve to be Cup champs. So get over it Dallas won they were clearly better!
