Game-Day Thread: Oilers vs. Flames

Less than 24 hours to go, thought it wouldn't be too soon for this one.

I, for one, am really hoping the Oilers can recover from their trip and take it to the Flames Saturday night. Already 0-2 against them...c'mon, boys!

I hope Conklin gets the start, but does Salo back him up? Or do they give him one more game off and send Valiquette back to Toronto after the game?

Bart

To me this is an important game, even moreso than any other battle of Alberta. The Oilers have been fighting that win one lose one situation falling below and battling back to .500 for some time now. They need to string some good games together taking themselves over the .500 mark. If you look at the remaining games this month, the Oilers could do some real damage with only a couple games against really difficult conference leaders. The problem in this game is it is that infamous first game home after a long road trip - get this one behind them and hopefully they can settle back in nicely. I would like to see Conk in net but frankly the #1 is still TOmmy's so whenever he is ready get him back in there. most important thing is to come out with intensity and ensure that the battles and races are won. The last meeting was that 4-2 debocle that saw Edmonton lose every battle and foot race. Calgary is only effective when they outwork their opponents. If Edmonton doesn't let this happen, and stay out of the box all night, it should be an easily winnable game. Very important IMO.

The Oilers have struggled against the Flames for a while. Why? I dunno. The Flames look at each game against the Oilers like a playoff game (maybe because it's the only meaningful competition they've seen in about 7 years.)

Even though we're only 1/5 of the way into the season, it's not too early to start thinking about playoff implications. Playoff implications? yeah. I think that like pretty much every year, the Oilers will be one of the teams fighting for the final playoff spot in the last couple of weeks of the season. The Flames could be one of the teams they're battling with, and head-to-head games are the 2nd tiebreaker. Lose this one, and the best we can do is tie the season series.

As well, the Oilers can actually make some headway in the conference standings.

I don't even want to think of the possibility that the Flames can go up 3 and 0 in the BOA. It's just depressing.

To me, the Oilers are looking good. I am not going to say "Yay our defence and goalie troubles are solved because we shut out Minny!" but it has been steadily improving. I would even wager that by the end of November our GF will be higher than our GA.

My number one concern at this point is faceoff specialists. Our best was Marty who won just over %50 of the draws. The faceoff guys were good in Minny.

Just a question, who are the faceoff guys for the Flames and are they good? I know saying the words "good" and "Flames" in the same sentence is an oxymoron but help me out. (Okay that was a cheapshot, but I HAD to! )

To beat a team like the Flames, who love to play the 1-2-2 trap probably even more than the Wild, the Oilers have to smother those Shames with great forechecking like last game. I want to see them come out speedy and dangerous. I know a team like the Flames isn't exciting to watch by any means, but they always step up their game against Edmonton, and the Oilers have done the exact opposite the last two meetings, despite the FLames being huge rivals.

I want the guys to have some fire in their bellies, I want to see them mercilessly hit the Flames, and I want to see more than 2 goals. This team is proving to everyone who thought they would have trouble scoring that they can indeed put the puck away! There is no excuse NOT scoring more than two goals on fringe goaltenders like McLennan or Sabourin (whoever they want to start)

Should be a good game! I'll be there! Unlike Calgary, we sell out our BOA's! GO OILERS!

Oh, my predictions is 4-1 Oil.

I just scored tickets to the game...unfortunatly the two times I've been to games this year it was against the flames both times (once in preseason and once in season) and we lost both.

My guess is McLennan will start for Calgary, Sabs wasn't great last game.

Only meaningful competition? We've been trying to make the playoffs the last 7 years, every game is meaningful, come now O_G_E

By the way Hemskyfan the Flames are basically always Conroy, Lombardi, Yelle and Betts down the middle. Yelle is a very good faceoff man, Conroy is above average. Betts and Lombardi are young, but Betts is a pretty good FO guy, Lombardi is probably a touch below average (though you'd never guess it from last nights stats, this case was reversed)

Haha thanks kreuzer, I really appreciate it, and thanks for not taking my cheapshots seriously, I didn't mean them in a malicious or hostile way like at calgarypuck, I meant it more like friendly jabber between neighbors.

Man, we NEED to win this one, and Calgary will play great because they need this one too. The Oil better play our rivals with passion unlike the last two times.

Flames win. The Oilers still haven't proven they can beat them and they are coming off a long road trip. First game at home is usually tough. The Oilers may have a chance if they have the lead after the first or if it's close. The last two Oilers/Flames games, the Oilers forwards could not generate anything offensively. I hope I wrong. Losing to the flames is like losing to the leafs.

Bite your tongue VN!! Flames win? Makes my tongue feel like I just licked a Gorilla's ass!! Trust me its no fun!!

The Oil are going to be flying.(I hope) The Flame outs are going to be lucky if they can keep up with us. I say 1-1 Tie. Oilers with 12 goal posts and one off McLennan's Huge Melon.

I hope I'm wrong. Is it on HNIC in the west? Here in Ontario, we have the pleasure of watching the anticipated Leafs/Sharks annual game.

That god for NHL center ice.

You mention the goal posts. Is it just me of have they hit a large number of goal posts this year. I think they've turned into 23 Sergei Zholtoks.

Zholtok. LOL. There have been more than I care to remember. Atleast Dvo is catching some breaks. He could probably have 6 goals by now if he could put some top spin on the puck!!

Im sure that HNIC west is showing the game. We have been lucky for the first part of the year. Almost every Sat. has the Oil.

FYI:
If the Flames win tonight, the total series (Ever) will be dead even - 69 wins apiece.
You guys can get a look at Lombardi - he's doing pretty good right now, one of the only Flames with any spark.
For the earlier poster - Calgary is one of the better face off teams in the league, it's what to do with the puck afterwards that's the problem.
My prediction: 3-2 Flames, for a 3-0 series lead

I am going to say the Oilers learned a lot playing against Minnie and on the road trip as a whole, and will keep standing people up at the blueline like I have been wanting them to do all year. I will say Final results

4-2 Edmonton,

Iggy and Gelinas for the Flames

Torres, Dvorak, Brewer and Hemsky for the Oil

Go boys, let take the BOA this time!!!

My Contribution To This Thread

I would like to state for the record that I really, really hate the Flames.

Kevin Lowe narrated that epochal flick "The Boys on the Bus", and when he said "There are people in Edmonton who wouldn't mind if the Oilers lost every game, as long as they beat the Flames," I was proud to be one of those people.

Okay, let's face it, I also can't stand Colorado, revile the Rangers, and detest Dallas, but I really, really hate the Flames.

Who's with me?

Big hate on for the Flames right here...I can't stand it when we lose to them - especially because it seems like each game means so much more to them than it does the Oil.

In order of ARGH!!
1. Flames
2. Leaves
3. Dallas

Going by the forward lines at practice:

Torres-York-Dvorak
Chimera-Horcoff-Hemsky
Moreau-Smyth-Pisani
Salmo-Stoll-Laraque

couldn't tell with the D... and Salo was no where to be seen today so it's Conks and Big Valley.

Guy, the listed order of these lines would not indicate which line might get more or less ice time with exception to Salmo-Stoll-Laraque who would be played a little less unless they were smoking or maybe I should say Flaming hot? Looks to me like MacT & Company are trying to take advantage of positive numbers generated by Moreau and Pisani and keep that pairing producing in Reasoner's absence. What do you think?

Well, looks like the anchor will incur my wrath again tonight for draggin down Hemsky and Chimera. Hopefully we'll have a few powerplays so we can throw out a decent offensive line at least a couple times this game. Torres-York-Dvorak need to have another good game. Although I honesty wonder if we should be spreading those guys out sometimes. Dvorak-Hemsky and Smyth-Torres combos would be interesting to see, just not sure if we can/should do that right now. We'll see how the homestand goes.

Chimera has points in 2 of the last 3 games, so does horcoff...

I thought that they have been playing rather well together the past 2 games.

Chimera has 1 pt in the last 3 games, 3 pts for the yr and is -2. Horcoff continues to struggle with a -8. He did manage a short-handed goal thanks to York.

These stats are not a ringing endorsement of fine play.

Edmonton wins by 3. I will be happy if Hemsky gets a shot, he has been stuck at 10 for 3 games.

You're right dawgbone, boy if Chimera-Horcoff-Hemsky got hot and Horcoff turned it around poor LoudmouthHemskyfan#1 would be eating humble pie, probably happily as long the 'Oil' were winning, but they would be rather large wedges he'd have to shallow.

Unfortunately, to date, I'm the one Horcking-Back-the-Humble! But I still think the hockey gods will still look down kindly on Sean.
