Good pick up, but probably won't fill Ward's role.

Unless his consistency and work ethic have improved that much I'm not a huge fan of this signing. That gives the Canes 8 defensemen on one-way contracts and takes a spot away from Babchuk's ice time.

Interesting to note that the same article mentions the Hurricanes possibly signing Brad Isbister. I hope they aren't looking at him as a top six forward. Many teams have given him a shot hoping he would pan out and be a late bloomer like Glen Murray, but he just doesn't show that drive to elevate his game...

I think Peter Laviolette's coaching philosophy (which favors skating and brisk puck movement) could pay dividends with Tanabe. Low risk IMO.

Edit: Jim Rutherford apparently agrees: "The addition of David strengthens our defense," said Carolina general manager Jim Rutherford in a statement. "His skating and style of play fit well with our team's up-tempo system and the way the NHL game is played today."

I laughed, followed by sobbing when I thought of the possibility of him being paired with Turnoverdovsky.

Wow... that's extremely impressive depth.

Teams like Edmonton should move in for one of these defenseman, if Carolina is looking for a forward.

Didn't Wallin go back to Sweden? Anyway, not a very imposing bunch, but it was a blueprint that worked for them last year.

Me too. In essence, they now traded Knyazev for Williams and a 4th. That trade keeps looking better and better for the Canes.

I am hoping this is a move just for Albany.

Although I would pay money to have some take Turnover off of our hands.

I think they are trying to prevent what happened to us in Jan./Dec. last year....we ran out of d-men because they were all hurt and Cullen had to step up and play D.

They should have just bought a couple extra rolls of duct tape instead of picking him up for $900,000. Maybe since its for one year he will work his butt off....

Don't forget they also have Jack Johnson (although he probably won't be leaving college early). He should be in the NHL next season.

It doesn't. A moderator edited the thread title, but I can't find any official word on it outside of the rumor on TSN.

I changed the thread title back to just Tanabe.

They should just move Anton Babchuk if they're not going to play him. Bah.

You need to look up Tverdovsky's salary if you think THAT is nonsense.
