Relatively even due to Smyth's intangibles and the fact he is making 3.5 million and Gagne will likely make more. Gagne is a better player in my mind and has more upside and is great defensively as well. But Smyth is a great player and leader.

Maybe I was wrong... Gagne is better and more valuable even at a higher salary. Still Smyth is a clutch player and a great player in his own right so a trade for the two wingers isn't outrageous at all if Edmonton sends a little extra to the Flyers.

I think Gagne is the more valuable player. Smyth is more of a grinder type player who can put the puck in the net (30 goals or so) whereas Gagne is skilled player who can score anywhere between 40-50 goals and could be a 100 point scorer.

Smyth greatest attribute is his character and heart. These attributes could be made up by other players on a team. Primeau, Forsberg, Richards, Calder all bring a little of what Smyth has to offer but getting a bonafide goal scorer who has a chance to score every time he's on the ice is a little harder to find imo.

I've read them so many times that I simply distilled it down to a single sentence.

Hard call, if Gagne can stay healthy him, but for the fact that he seems a little shaky I'd take Smith.

Did Clarke make a serious push to try and obtain Smytty a couple of years ago? Or was Smytty just a player that Clarke highly coveted?

EDm wont let Smyth go. The EDM fans love Smyth and he is a VERY important part of the team.
