my humble top/worse 3.

top 3

Dany Dubé, i might even try listen to ckac and watch on RDS this year.
Mathias Brunet, talk about prospects, nice information, nice article. His comments are... hum... always updated and recent, not some old schools mind a la Jean Perron.
Gagnon, he is ok, he is really the reflect of what we here in general think. A good mind.

McKenzie is nice.

worse
Bergeron : HE SOOO BASHED our youngsters at the begining of last year "Higgins will never be a good NHLer... Plekanec ? we dont need another less talented koivu... etc.. etc..." He is SOOO outdated.
Perron : I think he know how to coach old way style... but he doesnt really know modern hockey in general. Most of what he say sound stupid.
Pierre Rinfret : the ONLY reason he is known his cause he got a big mouth, the guy is just plain stupid and say non-sense, start rumors... he is the worse! He come from the radio media and he so get on my nerves!

PS : i may sound harsh... and who i am to judge... but, like most of us here, i have a good general comprehension of modern hockey and THEY DONT.

Tough question. I don't read the French papers on a regualr basis, but from what I see, Brunet seems to have the best feel for the local hockey scene. I like Dube and Gagnon, Lavoie seems very competent.

On the English side, while I enjoy the Team990 in general, and they devote lots of airtime, I don't think they have an expert. Marinaro covers the team well, and I'll give him credit for non stop coverage, but I don't think he ranks with the guys above. As much as the masses hate him, I like McGuire. I don't always agree, and find his hammering the same facts over and over annoying, [yes I know you'd have preferred staal or Bourdon], he gives a good account of the league overall.

I enjoy reading Red Fisher, he gives a historical perspective, and still commands a media presence that guys like Carbo and Gainey understand. He isn't in day to day touch like a Brunet though. Hell, the guy turned 80.

The Gazette devotes space to the team, but I don't see much quality coverage. No columnist worth reading, and Hickey doesn't rank with guys like Brunet either.

CJAD, no idea, never listen. On English television, Reusch [retiring] and Teeman understand the game and the league quite well, if they talk, I'll listen. Teeman would be great on radio where he could talk a bit, television on a station like that limits his talent imo.

I enjoyed Gagnons blog while it was running smoothly, you could see he has a head on his shoudlers.

I to enjoy McGuire, believe it or not he has more hockey knowledge in his little pinky than most/all of us combined.

I now despise Ron Mclean since the bling got to his head.

Couldn't agree more about McLean. I don't usually get too excited about the ones I don't like, remote is always at hand, but McLean's just drives me nuts. I see no postives at all. The fact that the whole country wrung their hands when he was squezzing CBC makes me despair about the public at large. The SNL interview caricature that Chris Farley used to do, was a better quality interview.

Bob McKenzie is far and away #1 in my books. He is in perhaps the unique position of never saying anything I disrespect, never seeming to fabricate or exaggerate, it is almost scary sometimes how well he does his job. (I probably disagree with myself or get carried away and recognize that I wrote stupid things myself even, but not with Bob M!)

There are a few others who are generally pretty reliable. As others have mentioned, Dube and Brunet seem to be among the best, although they aren't perfect like BM and will sometimes pass along something a bit bogus-seeming. (Like Brunet's latest Hawks retrospective, for example). Pierre McGuire is also very good, as long as you can look beyond his schtick. I will listen to anything those guys have to say.

Lately Jacques Demers has annoyed me the most amongst the guys I see regularly on TV. The tabloid writers (and that would include the non-Habs guys like especially Garrioch and Strachan) are really annoying and out of touch with reality too, which always annoys me because I figure I know people who would do their jobs much better and are dying to land such high-profile gigs. Sad.

The good:

M. Brunet
P. McGuire - knows what is happening on the ice
D. Dube
B. McKenzie - knows best what is happening on the administrative level
F. Gagnon

--- the 100% gang, besides Gagnon mentionned above... Perron is better then the rest. He may be a bit out dated, but he is a real hockey guy who despite his obvious lack of language skills, has been around Hockey Canada and other international hockey. The others are just local village folk. They only know their neighbours and not much about anything else.

The bad:
CBC- all of them
SRC- just drivel for the uninitiated
P. Bouchard- king of the obvious statement
Le Baron.... knows squat, opionion is worthless. Same for his buddy.
Benoit Brunet- come on!!!

Wow, that was fun

I hate Yvon Pedneault. I can't believe this guy is in the hall of fame!!!! He's horrible and knows absolutely nothing about hockey!!! I also hate Glen Healy and Greg Millen on CBC/TSN. They come up with the dumbest comments and observations I've ever heard.

Drove home from Mtl with a big smile on my face yesterday. Plus, he hits Mtl in November.

Fox is where he explains the game to Americans; Hot Stove is where he had all the inside stuff on player movement, etc., which was very good. I don't think he's very good at evaluating talent, though. I find myself shaking my head when he talks about players individually.

I agree. Those three are THE worst. And Healy just hates the Canadiens.

I forgot Jacques Demers, who I think is the absolute best out there when it comes to breaking down a game. But when he slips into his coach rah-rah mode, he gets annoying sometimes. "They aren't playing for the jersey!" That stuff gets tiresome if he does it too much (which, in his defense, he had to last season). But I generally learn something every time I listen to him.

Among all, the most serious one is by far Mario Langlois.

I can beleive that nobody named Don Cherry !!!

Asking what are the good journalists , reporters and analysts would have been great , if the starting thread wouln't have mixed professional writers or comentators , with the showmen of a variety talk show

100 % SHOWMEN ARE NOT JOURNALISTS ; they don't have any kind of formation , school or background to be writer or journalists .
there are different kind of journalist and that would be great to have more than one category ;

journalist ( write article about hockey , trades ,prospects); Brunet , Gagnon

Reporter ( writes report of a game , season , ) ; Brunet , Mario Leclerc

Analyst ;( talks about strategy , game style 0 Dany Dubé

commentator ; ( descrpition of the game )Dany Dubé

panelist ( talks about the team , the league or hockey at large ; editorialist , gives his view of the team ); Pedneault

I don't mind listening to Cherry, but he's getting senile. 99% of what he says is for effect anyway it seems. he's the English 110%.

Yup! Those were my 2 picks too.

Bottom 3... Well theres just so many mortards... it's hard to pick.

But I'll take Michel Bergeron... he's to the habs what Newman was to Sienfield...

And special award to Cherry... He stills comes up with some good stuff (when it's actually about on ice plays) but most of the time it's like ROC's little Bergeron.
