Rumour: Staios

A rumour from Leafs TV/Mojo radio is that the Leafs and oilers are talking a trade involving Steve Staios. IS this believeable? feasible? What would he command that the Oil needs?

Highly doubtful I'd say, he's playing the most minutes on our blue line, and I really doubt we'd give him up even though he's an FA after the season.

Hmmm...the only way I see this happening is if Lowe thinks he won't be able to sign Staios to a new contract by the end of the year. But then our D would be fairly suspect...so unless Comrie goes for some blue-chip defender & Staios goes for some forward help (center)?

Yup, last year he moved up the depth charts quite substantially because of exceptionally consistent solid play.

I would say the trade would be for either darcy Tucker or a Leafs defensive prospect like Brendan Bell.

Staois
for
Tucker

or

Staios and 2nd

for

Pilar and Bell

We REALLY, REALLY don't want Marcy. He would be booed out of the rink.

Pilar and Bell don't really help us that much.

Don't think these teams make very good trading partners in this kind of situation.

If Staios is gone, we would have no defensive depth, so I hope he won't be gone unless another D is coming back.

Brewer
Smith
Cross
Bergeron
Semenov
Ferguson

That'll be our top 6. Not very convincing is it

Tucker's certainly an excellent player, I just don't think the Oilers can afford to trade any defender without getting one in return.

If they can't sign him, maybe they deal him for a less expensive version. Lowe has been known to do that in the last few years.

I can see staios and smith getting traded for defensive prospects like coliocovo. If lowe can't sign these guys to an extension, then he has to trade them. The reality is that we probably aren't winning a cup this year. Lowe has to look 2-4 years down the road.

I'm sick of that comment...thats all we ever say, look 2-4 years down the road, so I'm guessing were never winning a cup again.

Our captain and top minute dman for a prospect? Unbelievable.

He doesn't mean both for one. But I don't think you can make those sort of moves 1-for-1 either and expect the team to win any time soon. You need vets.

i would take coliocovo for either of those guys or someone like tyutin. Sad but true but todays oilers have two types of vets: those who will sign long term deals (ethan and ryan) and those who are traded for kids. The cba has to be fixed and cal nichols has allready said that a renewed current cba means the oilers leve edmonton. Lowe is building the team for post 2004.

Lowe is trying to sign both. The ball is in steve staios' and smiths' court.

And how many times have you seen Pilar play? He's not a youngen, Karel is in his mid-20's and put up 7 points in 6 games in the AHL so far this season... that's coming off a life threatening disease. His health is back to normal and he's once again considered one of the Leafs top young defensemen.

I think he'd be a perfect fit in Edmonton, a big, speedy, offensive defenseman with a wicked shot from the point.

Why would he get booed off the rink?

He would be a fan favorite within a month.

If Marchment can come to Toronto, then Tucker can go to Edmonton.

Bell is a prospect, but I think Pilar would look really good as an oiler. Toronto right now has 3 offensive D men - Jackman, Kaberle and Pilar. that is one too many; a trade is coming.

Bell was CHL defenseman of the year last year.

Jackman's anything but an offensive defenseman.

The Oilers have a rep for straightening out players with personal/on ice issues, I wouldn't freak out if they took a chance on Tucker. I just don't think we need him.

Smyth, Torres, Isbister, Chimera, Moreau is a pretty nhl calbre/feisty/effective group.

I doubt that we could get Tucker for a guy we'll only have for one season, and I doubt that the Oilers are in the market for a 28 year old anyways.

Cola/Pilar/Bell - the Leafs don't seem to me to be so close to contention that they'd give up top prospects for impending ufa's, they'd have to be able to sign them in advance, even so it seems like a lot. I guess Lowe would have to bite if he was offered a blue chipper who could play in a relief role this season.

He's speaking for a large portion of us...

The guy is at best a 6/7... check out some scouting reports on him, they all say the same... big guy, hard shot, doesn't use his size well. The Oilers have enough 5-7 defencemen...

No he wouldn't be a fan favorite in a month...

I've hated that gutless little puke since he was crying in Tampa.

The last thing the Oilers need is a giant target on their team... half the fans already hate him, and his non-stop crying routine won't win many other fans over.

Ya, we don't need Tucker. He's dirty, and takes way to many penalties and often at bad times! I'd like something like:
Smith, Chimera
for
Colaiacovo, second OR third

Would that make sense for all parties? I think the value is pretty close. Smyth or Moreau would get the "C" with Staios recieving an "A". I think that would be best, then we'd have some more cash to spend on keeping Staios too!
